Formulas: do I know ALL versions or ONE version?

Rules Discussion

Example: An alchemist has the formula for Alchemist's Fire.

Does that mean they know the Lesser, Moderate, Greater and Major versions of Alchemist's fire, and can craft the higher level versions as soon as they get to the appropriate level?

Or is it incorrect to say that they have the Alchemist's Fire formula, and it would be more appropriate to say that they know the Lesser Alchemist's Fire formula, and as they go along they can have the opportunity to learn the Moderate (etc) Alchemist's Fire formula?

I don't want to rip off my alchemist player by denying him knowledge of those higher level formulas... nor do I want to rip off my player by denying him the chance to be incrementally excited by learning higher level formulas along the way. I just want to get it right :)

They need to learn the Formula for each distinct Level of the Item so one Formula for Lesser, another for Moderate etc, etc

Any time the rules discuss specific Formulas for Crafting Alchemical Items it refers to each different Type or Item Level as having its own Formula.
It's not nearly so punitive though as the Alchemist can always just purchase new Formulas to add to their book, or barring that they should be able to buy the Alchemical Item itself and Reverse Engineer it to add the Formula to their book.

Plus they start with 8 Formulas and get two free Formulas in their book every level so the PC shouldn't have a hard time quickly amassing a Formula Book full of different options for Alchemical Items to make after even a few levels and a cut of the treasure from adventuring. In terms of a class that can easily trade their WBL for extra versatility Alchemist really shines.

Yeah, I wasn't so much worried that the class would be starved for options, but rather I didn't want to create a situation where they learned everything they could too early, or else where I was denying them something they ought to have.

Thanks for clearing it up :)
