Story banes and the Vault

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Sorry for the duplicate but I'd like a feedback on the "rules" part of a previous scenario related post. Quoting myself (sorry) :

The way the Vault is defined in the Adventure Path, it includes pretty much all cards except the one not available yet at your level or the ones removed from game.
But clearly, locations, proxies, scourges, and the like are part of the Vault (not only standard boons & banes).
If so, story banes also seem to be included in the Vault. Now:

The Courtesan, When This Is the Hour wrote:
When you would encounter a non-story bane barrier, banish it instead, then summon and encounter a Task barrier.

The way the Courtesan (and I guess other cards) is written I should "summon" a Task barrier drawing randomly in "both" non-story banes but also story banes.

1) I guess it's not the intention, but RAW....
2) If it's the intention, how do I do that? Should I shuffle story bane barriers into standard non-story bane barriers, then search, then sort them all back, then reshuffle the on-story bane barriers... Just not efficient at all.

My guess is - unless I missed it - there is a sentence missing somewhere in the rules (P.14)/FAQ under "Summoned Cards and New Cards" saying something like:

If you are asked to summon or add/draw a new bane from the Vault, unless stated otherwise, it has to be a non-story bane.

I think this falls under "common sense" -- story banes are given their own section of the vault separate from the regular monsters and barriers. I haven't seen anyone ever be confused in play that they need to include story banes in the random pulls from the vault when drawing a new monster or barrier, so I think this is a non-issue.

That said, the rulebook does already indirectly address this:

You’ll often need to locate specific locations, scourges, wildcards, other support cards, proxies, and story banes, so keep those types alphabetized to help you find them quickly during play. Keep other card types shuffled, as you will often be asked to draw random cards from them.

This explicitly states that you should keep story banes separated from regular monsters and barriers and implicitly states that you won't be asked to draw random cards from the story banes section. I'd feel comfortable quoting this line (combined with the dealing with cards sidebar on p8) as RAW that "summon and encounter a monster" or "draw a new monster" does not include story banes.

I would feel the same on your first point, but unfortunately this thread seems to contradict it:

https://paizo.com/threads/rzs42oz7?Curse-of-the-Crimson-Throne-5D-Setup-Que stion#7

... where Vic explicitly confirms that when instructed to build a "Devil pile" with all Devil monsters from the Vault - it DOES include story banes.

On your second point - Justifiable Deicide is (to my knowledge) the precedent that establishes that you may be asked to draw random Henchmen. In conjunction with the thread I quoted, it seem indeed Frencois is correct that by RAW nothing precludes you from drawing Story-bane Task barriers as well (For the record, I rather think Curse 5D's set up should be clarified, as an exception).

I would append Frencois' question with another from that thread (that definitely falls under the "Story banes and the Vault" subject), that Vic seems to confirm with an "Excellent point!" but leaves my group somewhat devided:

3) Are Story Banes really supposed to be subject to Vault-purge rules? RAW seems "yes", but this seems to clash with our "common sense" as Skizzers puts it above...

I fully agree with skizzerz's "common sense". That said, the rules are misleading redarding cards written as The Courtesan. IMHO.

Yes and No. I see your point but often doesn't mean by default if my English is good enough.
