Quick Drawing a Shield

Rules Discussion

Made a new character the other day, thought I might try my hand at a Ruffian Rogue. Also interested in trying out shield combat a bit and as I made my character I ended up taking Quick Draw thinking it would be nice to get the weapon out a bit quicker. Asked my DM how he felt about me also using it to draw and ready my shield, he paused for a bit as he often does when I ask him anything not strictly RAW and said "sure sounds reasonable".

Figured for the fun of it I would see how you folks stand on the topic. Would you as a DM be cool with Quick Draw working also with drawing and readying a shield?

Thanks much for any input!

PF1 had quick-draw shields. Shields are (arguably) weapons, so why not?

I wouldn't allow it to draw AND raise a shield in one action.

And since shields have a specific strap (CRB 273 table 6-2)it seems kinda weird mechanically.
Quickdraw works by it being draw and attack in one motion, the shield would be draw, strap, attack.

Yep this is why I asked him, glad he was more reasonable. :) Its really only a small difference between the two and it makes quick draw a bit more worth wile.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Naw. Quickdraw specifically says draw a weapon and strike with it. So you could draw your shield and strike with it. But if by "ready your shield" you mean raise it to gain the AC bonus, then no.

Similarly, you can't draw a wand and cast with it or a potion and drink it.

Where is the shield being drawn from? Are you talking about like... a shield on your back? A shield on the ground? I'm having trouble understanding where you will be carrying a shield that you could even draw it in the first place.

If it's on your back, I mean, really, one action to take a shield off your back, strap it to your arm, and raise is a bit insane. If it's, idk, attached to your belt? Maybe? Seems extremely unwieldy to me in the first place.

Since you are clearly in houserule territory to begin with, I might suggest making it two actions to take the shield off, strap it on you arm, and raise it for +2 ac. That's still way beyond the quick draw feat's actual purview, but at least it's a bit more reasonable.
