I was thinking about giving my character a spyglass which he could use when scouting in the wilderness or on the ocean. However, there seems to be no mechanical advantage to using a spyglass over the naked eye in the system. I know that I can get a GM to come up with some advantage but I would have liked the item to have some kind of rule built in. What am I missing? (I know you see 8x farther but that actually does not provide any advantage since I do not find any early/mid spells with LOS range, it does not reduce range penalties, or anything else)
My problem is that this cool ;little bauble costs 20 gp which is competing for a whole lot of other things at lower levels. Does it provide any use/advantage? If not, I will wait until 8-9th level when a waste of 20 gp is not a big deal.

You scan an area for signs of creatures or objects. If you’re looking for creatures, choose an area you’re scanning. If precision is necessary, the GM can have you select a 30-foot cone or a 15-foot burst within line of sight. You might take a penalty if you choose an area that’s far away.
It would significantly improve the ability to use the seek action a long distance away.
Left to the subjective nature of your GM but spotting a hidden ambush 200 ft away using a spy glass seems a lot easier than with the naked eye.
That said, I'd wait 'till a higher level when the gold cost does not consume a significant portion of your wealth.
