I think that like Adam Ant, Bowie, and Peter Murphy, McCoy might have wanted to to do the acting thing. He had small part in a movie called Dust Devil, if I remember right.
Everything I know about Industrial, Goth, and all related, I actually learned from my girlfriend (dyed in the wool Skinny Puppy fan). Pre-Internet, this stuff just didn't make it to the sticks where I grew up.

He was in a movie called 'Hardware', which was widely believed by 2000AD readers to be a copy of a 'Future Shock' episode. The co-writer/artist was Kevin 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' O'Neill (court case detailed here.).

I like The Police (What 80s pop fan doesn't?). I happen to like Gwen Stefani too. Some of her music has obvious ska and reggae influences just like The Police, and I think she'd do a great cover of this Police classic. Any other Police/Gwen Stefani fans agree?

Drunken Nomad!
This one's for you!
And THIS!
And THIS (head explodes)
Hey Snort!
I just ran across this entry. THANKS! Id seen the handfarting Trooper some time ago. Fun guy at parties, right? The Gauchos version is double awesome! The little girl helping the singer was icing on the cake.
I saw Joan about the time of this video at our county fair. Butched out with wifebeater, wallet chain, khakis and pure attitude. Cant remember what she was promoting (maybe The French Song or her version of the Mary Tyler Moore theme...seems like those were new-ish at the time). Granted, Ive had a crush on her for forever, but I like her look here better.

DOKKEN - Dream Warriors How bout that George comin thru the wall and making Arquette laugh?

And a couple more rockers from my formative years.
These guys were my favourites, though, along with this guitar god.
Having said that, this song is arguably the greatest Norwegian rock song ever written. Too bad about the home-made visuals, but I don't think these guys ever made any official videos - they were too busy drinking.

When MTV was new, not every cable system carried it. Ours didn't until sometime in 1983. There was a video show on Friday Nights on the USA Network, and that was the only place I could regularly see videos.
When we went to visit my cousins in Florida, who did have MTV, I spent most of my Florida vacation sitting indoors watching the television.
My nomination for best video of the 80's is:
Donald F a g e n's "New Frontier"
(This board's profanity filter apparently considers his name to be a swear word.)
My favorite recent one is "Power Out" by Arcade Fire.
Where do they even show new videos nowadays, aside from YouTube? They still make music videos, so they must be showing them somewhere. MTV certainly doesn't.
I discovered VH1 Classic a couple years ago and was thrilled to be able to see my old favorites again, but almost immediately they stopped showing videos and started putting in endless documentaries (mostly about crappy hair metal bands) and movies and concert films. Even the retro channels give the music video no respect.

I can't remember if Level 42 already made it onto this thread. If they did, it was probably "Something About You," and not this little gem.

Just remembered this thread. So many dead YouTube links - I have no idea what we were linking to...
Still, to sum up my 1980s:
Best band of the classic MTV era: The The (sorry 'bout the fake video). Runner-up: The Police. The Clash may have been the band that mattered, but I never saw them on MTV.
Worst band: Bros (one of them went on to play the bad guy in Hellboy II; as you can see, he got an early start on eeeeeeevil). Numerous others contend for this prize, but I'll go with Vanilla Ice as the runner-up.
Best video: New Order, head and shoulders above any other. Bronski Beat's "Small Town Boy" gets a honourable mention (it actually inspired me to some political activism), as do the ZZ Top videos off the "Eliminator" album.
Worst video: The epilepsy-inducing Wang Chung. The song's OK, but the visuals make you want to barf.
The iconic song: Alphaville's Big In Japan. For the record, I am not pleased with Jay-Z's "Young Forever" track. Runner-up: Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls" and Duran Duran's "The Reflex".
Worst song: After The Fire's butchering of Falco's Der Kommissar (obviously the link is to the original). Don't want to think too much about others, but chances are it was made by Germans.
Best song: The aforementioned New Order track. Everything on Motörhead's "Orgasmatron" album. The Fixx' One Thing Leads To Another. The Jam's Town Called Malice. And Madness' Baggy Trousers.
Hopefully these links will stick around a little longer...

When I was like 9 years old there were a slew of MTV videos that caught my imagination. I'd close the doors to the living room and turn the T.V. volume all the way up, just to jump around all over, bouncing off the walls and jumping on the furniture to these 90's classics from the punk/grunge explosion:
Green Day - Basket Case
Green Day - When I Come Around
Green Day - Welcome to Paradise
Green Day - Longview
The Offspring - Come Out and Play (Keep 'em Seperated)
The Offspring - Self-Esteem
Nirvana - Come As You Are
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Unfortunately two of those bands have become utter crap, and the last one had one of the most famous rock suicides ever. Why, oh why must good music implode with fame?

Seconded on all counts.

Not Van Halen? Man o man that was THE topic of discussion for our group in 85ish. You stickin with VH or Dave? They did a riff on that in 'Airheads' but it was serious at the time. Go Diamond Dave!
Course so was Ozzy vs Dio (and others) in Sabbath. Full on Dio for me! I know, I know, fairies wear boots and ya gotta believe me and NIB and Electric Funeral are all AMAZING...but Dio just took it to another place.
What about Rick Allen losing an arm? That was a big deal too. Dude! How is he still in the band? ...oh. Course they started sucking right about then. 'High and Dry' is one of my alltime favorite albums.
Bon Scott (RIP)!
Cliff dying from black ice was another big deal to some of my friends. I didnt really get into Metallica till 'Garage Days' (I got somethin to say....) I shoplifted the 'Master' cassette, but didnt really listen to it. I was into Malmsteen/Vai/Satriani/Murray-Smith/Lynch/Takasaki/DeGarmo/Angus!/Eddie VH/PhilCollen-SteveClark/SteveStevens and super high falsetto during the early years of Alcoholica. I realize now that I was missing out on some amazing riffage. Ride the Lightning is one that I still play regularly. It was Anthrax and their nods to Stephen King and other general sillyness that got me to thrash. Megadeth's 'Wake Up Dead' and 'Go To Hell' from Bill and Ted's second movie also helped out. The first Bill and Ted soundtrack is still AWESOME! Listened to it the other day.
**EDIT**
Wow you are right about the links. THAT SUCKS!

Y'know, sometimes I wonder whether Van Halen was one more of those bands that were enormous in the US and almost unknown back home (like, say, Steve Miller or the Dave Matthews Band). Nobody I knew had a single VH album, and the only song anyone knew from them was "Jump". And while Dave played at Monsters of Rock at Donington (and thus got into Metal Hammer Magazine), we knew him from "California Girls" and "Just A Gigolo", and thought he was about as metal as Rod Stewart. Of course, nobody knew who Sammy Hagar was. I really do think there were more Seahags fans at my high school than Van Halen fanciers.
A more important debate was Metallica versus Megadeth. After "Peace Sells, But Who's Buying" I sided with the 'Deth (I still do) and lost some friends over that. Cliff Burton dying (in Sweden! On their way to Oslo!!! Damned Swedes) was a big deal; Rick Allen losing his arm less so - once the novelty wore off, we didn't think too much about that. Some people took their metal a bit too seriously - I traded a Sepultura LP for a motorcycle! Of course I had to give it back once the guy's dad found out, but for a week or so... Man, it was nice riding around on it.
We would get a ball and a casette player out in the breaks between classes and used to set up our soccer teams over musical preferences - thrashers vs. glam fans, or Iron Maiden versus Saxon fans, with the winners getting to bring the tapes the next day. We thrashers were terrible ballplayers, so I had to listen to a lot of Guns'n'Roses, Sweet and Mötley Crüe. Good times!
