PFS2: Transferring Runes without Training in Crafting

Pathfinder Society

**

Does anyone know how this works? I can't seem to figure it out for Society.

The Core Rulebook states that runes can be transferred from one item to the next with a successful Craft check, 10% of the rune's material cost, and 1 day of downtime. However, I can't seem to find anything about paying for this service if your character is not trained in Craft.

I thought about using a boon to purchase a hireling with a +4 to Craft in order to make the check... but that hireling wouldn't have the Magical Crafting skill feat required to even attempt transferring the rune.

How would a character without training in Craft get a rune transferred in Society?

35 gold quickly becomes a trivial amount. Maybe just keep using your current +1 weapon, and upgrade your next one when you have the cash?

I am not aware of how a character Untrained in Crafting could transfer a rune, but luckily it's not something that will come up often.

Of course, if you haven't actually played the character since you bought/upgraded your weapon, you can just make the change before your next game.

I don't see any problem with a player character being able to do the transfer as long as no "wealth" is being exchanged.

The conflict there is that transferring is a Downtime activity, and can't be done in Exploration Mode.

OK, that is a problem then.

But I can't imagine it coming up often. Even if someone changes their mind about what they want their primary weapon to be, by Level 3 you're earning 38+ gold a scenario, so upgrading your new choice isn't costly.

Having a backup weapon is always a good idea in Pathfinder.

I have played in a module where the chronicle sheet includes a +1 katana, which not all classes can use. Why shouldn't a player be able to spend 3.5 gold + crafter payment (3.5 gold, presumably... 100% markup) to move the rune if said player doesn't have 35 gold yet?

Items on chronicle sheets aren't free... just available to purchase.

Why would you buy the katana and then transfer the rune?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This is just an example of someone finding an unsuitable weapon with magic that they want to transfer, when they could not afford the real thing. (My chronicle sheet appears to have an error on the listing...)

I don't understand why you would want to buy it, and transfer it. Just upgrade the weapon you already have.

You can't transfer runes during the scenario, for the already stated reason that transferring runes is a Downtime activity.

It sounds to me that Morton may be confused about items shown on chronicles. Characters do not automatically get the items listed. They gain access to them to purchase in the normal manner.

I was misled by an error on the chronicle sheet, indicating that the item was significantly cheaper than listed in the CRB.
