Returning Hatchet

If I had a character with Hatchet and a returning rune, and I throw it at different targets, would it be able to benefit from the sweep trait, since it is the same weapon?

If so, and I was a ranger, if I attacked an enemy that was not my hunted target with my first strike, but then directed my second throw at my hunted target, would that 2nd attack only be at a -1? And with the wording of sweep, it seems like I could use my third attack to attack my hunted target again would it be at a -3?

This runs into a similar issue with Thief rogues and dex to damage. An agile, finesse dagger thrown...is it still a melee weapon? I say yes.

With your question, RAW, it would do what you are asking.

Others are not agreeing.

If not, then thrown melee weapons need some serious rework.

Except the sweep quality does not rely on the weapon being melee or used in melee (even if all current examples are melee). The imagery of doing a "sweep" suggests it, but there's no description or mechanic that's melee exclusive.

So you could sweep w/ two throws if you'd like.

Really oddly though, you could also use the Critical Specialization on an axe if you throw it, crit, and have an opponent next to that target and within your reach. So throw it really well at the guy 10' away, and you can harm his buddy who's next to you and him, but not his other buddy just next to him. Weird to me since the cinematic solutions to justifying one should justify the other AFAICT.
Oh well. A bit niche for arguing over.

i guess things get wild when the axes start getting tossed around.

Sovereign Court

If you're describing it like Xena's Chakram and the hatchet hits multiple targets before returning, you could probably get away with it...

Xena

Silver Crusade

Or Kratos' Leviathan Axe from the newest God of War.
