Does darkvision have a range?

Rules Discussion

It looks like darkvision no longer has a range and works so long as you have line of sight. Is that right?

Sczarni

While Darkvision doesn't have a default range, there are various states of awareness that might affect your ability to perceive things.

Also, some imprecise senses do have a range, and it's conceivable that some sort of near-sighted creature in a future release might have imprecise Darkvision (although right now that's just a guess).

A particular elemental creature known as Riter's Air will also likely have a limited range of Darkvision (probably 60 feet).

Sure. But in PF1e most people who had dark vision had it limited to 60 feet. Most of these creatures no longer have that limitation which changes a lot of tactics and issues about underground exploring.

I got this completely wrong when I ran a session of PF2e. I'll have yo keep it in mind for the future.

Thanks for the confirmation:)

Also, if you have darkvision you also have low-light vision. For the ancestries in the CRB, there are no cases of having darkvision and not having low-light. And darkvision is defined in the Bestiary as including low-light vision.

There is an 18th level paladin feat that will grant darkvision to a character who has neither darkvision nor low-light vision.
