I’d love to see Pathfinder tackle sword-and-planet down the line. Seems a shame to have all these worlds and not use them.

For Good or Ill, I think that opportunity got sucked into Starfinder.

The 3pp adventure path Legendary Planet fits the bill. It's swords and planets. I've run the first two books and it is fantastic. They just finished up the final book of it (at least for Kickstarter backers)

Are you so sure? The elven portal network that just so happens to reach another world are at the heart of the first 2e Adventure Path, and the door to Akiton down in the Mwangi Expanse hasn’t gone anywhere, either.

One issue I find is that a few of the species introduced in Distant Worlds had an unsettling degree of biological determinism. Which we have fixed by Starfinder times, through the diagetic justification of "technological and social progress". Since that hasn't occurred yet, we're probably not going to Castovel or Triaxus on this side of the gap any time soon.

That’s a super good point; I’d forgotten about it, but the Starfinder lore - that the Lashunta eventually overcame the gender associations with their biological castes thanks to in-setting activism - does unfortunately mean that Pathfinder lashunta are still pretty iffy.

I was surprised to see that sort of thing still going on with Starfinder’s lizardfolk, too.

I would love to see a space-based Pathfinder AP. However, I agree that because of Starfinder we're very unlikely to ever see one.

Another problem is Paizo's attitude toward spaceships in the Golarion universe. They don't appear to be very interested in purely magical spacecraft, wanting them to appear to be more "realistic" than those found in Spelljammer for example.* I think any space-based adventure should involve spaceships and travel through space not just interplanetary teleportation and portal networks.

This was one of the big problems that I had with the Moonscar.

Spoiler:
As one of the reviewers noted, it could just as well have taken place on the Abyss. I recently ran it and changed to Somal gate to an Azlanti Spelljammer Helm which the PCs found and affixed to a ship so they could fly to the Moon. The first combat encounter against three succubi on shantaks could thus take place in space high above the Moonscar, and I thought that overall it had a much better space-based feel. I used a highly modified version of the Spelljammer adapted for 3.5 rules found in a 2002 supplement to the Dragon magazine.

* I could go on a longish rant that they're not very consistent and their idea of a "realistic" spacecraft is seriously flawed, but I don't have the time right now.

With this back on my mind, I’d like to necro this thread to solicit more pitches for sword-and-planet stuff! I might have a short campaign in this mold in me, once we get the rest of this year’s big books and a certain Akiton gazetteer.

That is the Akiton gazetteer I mentioned, yes :)
