So I just finished going line by line through the item crafting and spell learning rules, and I noticed that there is no way to research spells on your own. The only way currently listed to learn new spells is to level up or to copy from someone else.
Is there an official rule for this?
My current thoughts for home rules are to require the inventor and magic crafting feats and use the formula system as is. The formula level for a spell would be double the spell level. Uncommon spells get +1 to the formula level, and Rare spells get +2.

Inventor very specifically says you can invent a COMMON formula. If you let people invent their own uncommon+ spells, you might as well throw out rarity because it means nothing anymore. (Which to be fair is a valid choice for your campaign, rarity isn't for everyone.)
That aside, I don't inherently object to the idea that you could come up with common spells with such rules. But I also haven't done an in-depth comparison of the tradition lists. I think in previous editions the idea was the arcane list was more powerful and versatile than the divine, so it made more sense to limit the spells the wizard could prepare while the cleric got their full list. Now? Not sure that is true, and the sorcerer's status certainly implies otherwise.
