Looking for advice about my first PFS character

Pathfinder Society

Grand Lodge

Hi!

I'll soon be trying to play in an organized play setting for the first time. I thought of waiting until 2E was already in play, but they'll have a session in two to three weeks and I thought that I'd give it a try, not only to try the PFS setting but to get to know the people that play this around my area.

What I'm posting for is to look for opinions regarding my character. I've decided that I'll play my favourite character's (Zandu, CG Barbarian 7, soon-to-be Sentinel of Cayden Cailean) mom, Marelinda as a NG witch with the cartomancer archetype and 'Portents' as her patron. She is a Varisian fortune-teller, a follower of Desna, who has been traveling back and forth along the Kaspakari Road with a caravan for years, and now her son has left the caravan to protect Sandpoint.

I'm not looking for the most optimized character, but for one with which I can connect. I have the Deluxe Harrow Deck myself and have been reading extensively about the Harrow, so I'm looking forward to make Marelinda a colourful character that can provide myself and my co-players a funny game experience.

My main doubt revolves around which faction she should join. I've imagined her getting a 'message' from Desna in the cards, telling her that she should look for new mysteries and places as her son is doing, and the Pathfinder Society just happened to be accessible to her. Instinctively, I think the Great Lodge is the most appealing to her, as she is a highly curious but noble-hearted individual who thinks she could help the Society with her divination skills and find lost artifacts and secrets that may be dangerous if they fall into the wrong hands. I've also given a thought around The Exchange, since she has been living the tradespeople life in a caravan, looking for ways to maximize profit with her skills and provide enough for the caravan and her dear, binge-drinking, all-eating, prone-to-bouts-of-rage son.

Now, what do you think?

I thought you didn't have any PF experience before I read your post. Looks like you have an awesomely spooky character ready to go. Cartomancer archtype is legal for PFS. Looks like a lot of fun to play!

Exchange faction sounds good from a background perspective, but, take a look at the Dark Archive. I think finding long lost magical tomes may be in line with your PC.

First of all, thanks for your response!

The Dark Archive sure sounds nice, and I've come across a nice idea that intertwines religion with her story, as I tend to do (I love the pantheon, what can I do?) with a revelation in dreams from Desna, where she finds a new deck with long-lost cards like the Great Dreamer or the Pack of Wolves, and she understood it as a way to go discover secrets that lurk buried all over the place. It seems like Desna wanted all the copies of Great Dreamer gone, and maybe she fears she has forgotten any (that would be what Marelinda would eventually believe).
