Vehicles && Crafting

I've got a few questions regarding Vehicles and crafting them that I cannot find the answers to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. When crafting a vehicle one treats its HP and Hardness as 2 levels higher, giving +2 to both of these. When it comes to saving throw increase though, does this include the DC for creatures to avoid being rammed?

2. Is it possible to craft a vehicle at a higher level than it's listed? For example, could a character craft the Level 1 Buggy as a level 2 vehicle, and thereby increase the damage it does on a collision?

3. Is it possible to craft a vehicle that isn't specifically listed, creating a completely new vehicle?

4. If 2 and or 3 are possible, what are the rules for this? Specifically for society play.

Honestly, I'm not expecting much in terms of making vehicles better. The game feels incredibly unpolished and raw, with a lot of details either missing or omitted in some areas.

I'm probably wrong in this regard, but I don't think crafting of any kind is allowed in Society play.
If that's the case, this is probably the wrong forum for this question as it's the society subforum.

If not, sorry for assuming.

Crafting is allowed in SFS, it would be your Downtime Action.

1. No, that increase applies to saving throws made by the item. In other words; when someone tries to break your vehicle; not when you try to break someone with your vehicle.

2. There are no rules for that at the moment. Armory included rules for upgrading armor, but I haven’t seen any for vehicles yet.

3. No fixed rules, but you you can always work with your home game GM.

4. Not allowed in SFS.

No

No

Absolutely not. You could create something overpowered or specifically banned (like the turbo glider)

I really love the idea of crafting your own vehicle. I also love the idea of a scenario requiring a PC-supplied vehicle, much like scenarios such as #1-08 highly suggest buying an underwater weapon. Or even just permitting PCs to buy or rent.

But thus far I haven't seen a scenario written such that PC supplied vehicles are part of the narrative. #1-15 provides them, every other scenario assumes overland walking and no advantage to zooming along in a vehicle.

It is pretty unlikely that we'll have scenarios requiring a PC-purchased vehicle, because that would severely limit people's options when it came time to buy equipment for their primary function (ground encounters), which is always going to be the main thrust of society play.

It's more likely to be handled like starships in the future; if there are lots of expected scenarios with the "Vehicle" tag going forward, they'll give you a choice of two cars falling into various Tiers, let's call them the Pegasus Turismo and the Drake Suburban Assault Vehicle.

I suspect we may see some player-owned vehicles making appearances at higher tiers. (Not required, but just things players bought.) A blister pack of motospheres is definitely on my “nice to have when I get spare credits” list, and I’ve amused myself with the thought of a very high-level character pulling one of the smaller vehicles out of a MkIV null-space chamber.

My main's Enercycle and Exploration Buggy have come in handy at some points. The adventures definitely aren't written for them, but they're fun if the GM adapts around them.

Huh, vehicles might be the one place where the extra hardness from self-crafted items really makes a difference.

... and the flavor, right? Your mechanic or technomancer BUILT this. As in, fabricated each piece out of UPB and scrap, assembled it, furnished it, painted it. That's pretty awesome.

If nobody has a vehicle the party could always be given an option to rent one. Of if the party has one but it doesn't have enough seats, cheaper to rent 1-2 passenger vehicles.

I like the flavor, but I think it's actually a strength of the Starfinder crafting system that it doesn't clash with WBL like it does in Pathfinder. Also it's simplicity.

So it's a little surprising to see the bonuses for "made it myself" actually mattering.

My Mechanic will be building her bike. Mostly for flavor, I even gave her the Recalibrate Engine trick.

Just have to decide which bike. Probably the Motorcycle.

Wow, I hadn't even looked at that. I didn't have much need for engineering before, but as I'm currently leveling AND buying my hover pod... I can spare those skill points...

Vehicles don't seem to follow the general guidelines for object hit points, and doesn't state how they ARE derived, so I'm not sure what effect adding 2 levels has on its hp. I think it would be 6hp, as the value for a sturdy piece of equipment is (3x lvl)+15. But other items are listed as 5+lvl, so it might only be 2hp.
