Not Your Father's Kingmaker (An Amalgamation Thread)

Kingmaker

Long time lurker. Considered from pbp stuff late last year, but ultimately decided against it. Last summer though I completed a 5E Wrath of the Righteous (using ideas from this board to fill in some story line gaps) campaign which was a lot of fun. Huge fan of the Paizo APs ever since the Shackled City Dungeon days though Pathfinder and I have a sorted history so I don't use it anymore. That isn't the point of this thread.

Currently I am running a modified Red Hand of Doom (5E) with fey instead of goblins but my players had expressed interest in “Kingdom Building” after they inherited some area of their own. It won't fit in the timeline of the current war so I started preparing another game that we could use it after this campaign which will be an amalgamation of Kingmaker/Rise of the Runelords/Curse of the Crimson Throne (plus I've been playing the Pathfinder Kingmaker game so I am all into Kingmaker again).

I will be using this thread to detail my modifications to the Kingmaker story line (maybe even my conversions to 5E), ask for feedback on the ideas, advice on somethings, and eventually serve as a campaign journal of types.

Curse of the Kingmaker Concept:

The political atmosphere of Brevoy is plot-line gold mine for me and mixing the plot line of Curse into that atmosphere along with several other parts of these boards makes for a very Game of Thrones atmosphere. I am using Curse by replacing Korvosa with Brevoy (Crimson Throne to Dragonscale Throne!) then taking the NPCs from Kingmaker listed as part of Brevoy to fill in some of the roles in Curse and alternating story as I need to fit. Some off the top of my head fill-ins...

King Noleski Surtova = King Eodred Arabasti
Natala Surtova = Ileosa Arabasti
(And no they aren't Lannisters twins... if you caught my drift).
Choral = Kazavon
Gaedren Lamm = Stag Lord (probably using a slightly younger Gaedren here that might have overthrown the original Stag Lord. I've always liked the idea of redemption of the Stag Lord through Akiros but more on that later).

Another problem that presented itself through was the “Fey Influence” as we will just becoming off a Fey heavy campaign. I haven't completely thought this out but that is where parts of Rise of the Runelords come in.

Karzoug = Nyrissa

That is everything I have for the core concept at this point. I will detail as I go with a general outline of adventures too.

Im also drafting a 5e Kingmaker campaign, which I intend to run after Return of the Runelords.
Please, share away!

I'm also thinking about adapting some kingmaker elements into a 5E exploration of Sarusan, so seconding the 'share away!' comment.

As for fey influence, what about replacing that with infernal influence as

spoilers for CotCT:
Asmodeus and his friends have their hands quite far up the strings of Korvosa

I hadn't checked this thread until today as I haven't really been working on this as heavily since my players are in the middle of the current campaign. I had literally considered the Infernal aspect the other night after gaming because one of the characters is now a Paladin of Conquest under Asmodeus that took the name Avarice.

If the character survives I have already decided to set him up in opposition of Karzoug. Essentially making it a fight between two evil forces that have sparked a civil war that the heroes get dragged into while trying to protect their domain. Especially if I add in the elements of the fiendish pact that are presented through the addition of Academy of Secrets to the Curse part of the story.

Anyways... I've started to alter bits and pieces of the set-up. I am replacing the entire Gaedren Lamm opening act of Curse with the Stolen Lands though I am considering dumping the "hexploration" aspect and just using the interesting parts in a more "Keep on the Borderlands" style. I am still working out the details, but currently the parts I am working on getting together is:

Early Concept Story Flow:

1) Introduction to the Courts-> Tournament (I want to introduce the tournament concept so it isn't as suspicious when "Pitax" does the tournament). I am currently looking at Topaz Championship (L5R Heroes of the Sapphire Throne Living Campaign module... an attack or assassination attempt on the King could happen here?) or Peril at King's Landing (SoIaF).

2) Intrigue of the Courts-> The tournament will cascade into Wedding Knight (also SoIaF) to add to the intrigue in the courts. Near the end the Stag Lord will crash the party and due to his brazen actions draw the ire of the Swordlords / Surtovas. I will pull most of the flavor of this encounter from Rise of the Runelords #1 but using the Wedding instead of a Festival.

3) Establishing themselves as Heroes -> Running the Stolen Lands (Kingmaker #1) and like I said above probably minimizing the "Hexploration" aspects of it and pulling the more interesting bits closer to the "homebase" of the heroes. The defeat of the Stag Lord will bring the characters back to the city where the "King" has died after the Gaedren Lamm intro of Curse.

4) Heroes become Lords -> Remaining parts of Curse #1 with parts of Runelords #1 into Curse #2/Runelords #2 cascading into Kingmaker #2 with the heroes getting their barony and dealing with some of the immediate threats to it. I am still iffy about this one... I need to read Runelords #2 again to make sure I can make it fit in the craziness of the death of the "King". The Queen will seize power at some point during this time and start the civil war... probably by the Queen blaming the Swordlords as an excuse for the Surtova to go to war and pull in as many other houses as possible.

That is all that I have worked out at this point. I need to do some more review on Curse, Runelords, and Kingmaker #3 to go from here. There is some more fine tuning to do on the above as well.
