I will preface this by saying that I'm incredibly new to D&D ,so there's probably an obvious answer that I'm missing. I'd also like to say that there's no third party supplements that are allowed in my current campaign, but my DM isn't cut and dry on the issue.
My current character is a rouge with the trapsmith archetype and snare setter archetype that revolves around traps. When I made the character I saw plenty of discussions online that told me player trapbuilding was a bad idea. Regardless of the consequences I wanted to build a character who focused on trap building, it seemed like a cool idea and I wanted to stick with it. We have gone through several sessions and it's going pretty well, my character is fine as a skill monkey rouge with an obsession for bear traps.
At this point we're all level five and although my traps can still have an effect in combat, I am starting to sorely feel my decision. I know that the character I was going for was never going to necessarily be a combat effective one but my character concept struggles with the base rulings around traps. Recently I've found the third party class Saboteur, which fulfills many wants that I have with my trapmaking character. Unfortunately, because I am new to D&D, I have no bearing on whether or not this third party class would be unfair in any way. I know that I could swing it to my party and they would be fine with it, since the class change wouldn't influence how my character acts in and out of combat. If I want to propose this to my DM however, I know that I need to make a solid case and if necessary compromise on a few parts of the class. If this class is unreasonable, are there any other classes that would be more balanced?
So in effect, is the Saboteur class something I could reasonably make a case for in a setting with no third party content? Many thanks in advance!

The saboteur is from Path of Iron, and there's a pretty good review of the book at endzeitgeist.com, so that would be one place to start.
I was a pretty big fan of the book in general, but I've never played or had any of my players play a saboteur, so I can't speak to it from personal experience.
