Idea:

Instead of just race boons at a convention, why not offer a 'level up' boon?

Will make a suggestion in Boon thread as well.

Frankly, that is would be like throwing large cans of beer at someone who is drowning.

As a very busy GM, I would like more opportunities to actually play.

Well, hopefully they can make the bar for GMing lower somehow without lowering the quality of GM.

A pipe dream, I know.

My problem has been 50-50 either I have to figure out where to dump a GM credit, or I have a whole bunch of folks that could *use* a level but I *just don't have time* to level all of them, that's why I suggested the 'auto-level' boon.

...there's a bar? I'm pretty sure it's, "Hi, I'd like to GM," if it exists.

I think he means that there is often a lot of work to prep a scenario, and to give it what it needs to make it he best possible experience for players.

Things like better scenario layout, editing, etc...

Make it so that most scenarios don’t require the “great GM” to make them great.

Wei Ji, please correct me if I am wrong.

You got the point, Jack.

I prep obsessively to the point where it's rather time-consuming and it limits the number of things and times I can volunteer.

I know that there are other folks who would GM and want to do a well-prepared job (much like how you ran Hall of Drunken Heroes at PaizoCon) but don't have a good place to start.

If I could get a less rough product to work with initially, it'd be easier to GM, IMO.

Well, some of it has been improvements in scenario layout. And some scenarios are just harder than others to prep, and it's not always apparent at first glance. Yesterday I played The Protectorate Petition, which didn't look like it had complicated mechanisms. But there are a lot of stories, and the GM really has to thoroughly read it to know which NPC knows what facts. Because the players are going to ask questions at a different point in the scenario than you expect.

All that said though, I do find that after a couple of years, you do become faster at preparing scenarios. Experience as a GM helps.

What does that mean for lowering the bar to entry? That there's always going to be a bar, because you need to gain that experience. Coaching by established GMs, and helping people pick easier to prepare scenarios to start with can help of course. And establishing a good culture among players that's welcoming rather than intimidating to new GMs.
