If a paladin has a ring of protection on, and activates smite evil, does he retain the ring’s bonus against other enemies and use the smite bonus to AC against the smite’s target?

Pedantic clarification:

To be more specific, the Paladin will use whichever bonus is higher, for example: A Paladin with 12 CHA wearing a Ring of Protection +2 would use the ring's deflection bonus against all targets. A paladin with 14 CHA wearing a Ring of Protection +1 would use the deflection bonus granted by Smite Evil (+2) against the target of their smite, and the bonus granted by their ring against other creatures (+1).
