Silver Crusade

I want to make a character focused on prevention of damage and negation of enemy attacks. Basically, I want to play a character that keeps characters alive. Damage is the best option. I know. However, I want to try a different approach this time. Abilities similar to the dual cursed oracle's misfortune ability appeal to me.

Any suggestions?

An oradin? I think you grab like two levels of life oracle the rest in paladin, and then the get foundling feat. Then you can transfer damage from a team member to yourself, and heal with boosted lay on hands as a swift action.

Maybe the sister in arms archetype for cavalier. Or the bodyguard one. You can intercept blows and boost AC.

Perhaps a polearm specialist with pushing assault and combat reflexes.

Lot of ways to go about this.

Alternatively, make yourself a tempting target while actually being nearly impervious. Maximum enemy whiffage is your goal.

dwarf
str:14
dex:15
con+16
int:12
wis+16
cha-05

traits: Defender of the Society, Glory of Old
01 fighter1 Steel Soul, Shield Focus
02 cleric1 (Community/Travel)
03 bloodrager[urban]1, [Shapechanger bloodline], Extra Rage
04 fighter2 Combat Reflexes, Dex>16, buy Belt of Incredible Dexterity
05 bloodrager2 [Uncanny Dodge], Dodge
06 fighter3
07 fighter4 [Combat Expertise]*, Additional Traits [Aldori Caution, Magical Knack]
08 fighter5

Skills: Acrobatics (at least 3 ranks), Perception (maxed), dabble rest

*Equipment: dex belt, int headband, mithral mountain pattern armor, mithral buckler (assume +1 magic ea), Boots of the Cat, nets

Perks by 5th level
* trigger-cast cleric spells and bloodrager spells
* 6 uses/day of two domain powers
* Fort+16/Ref+10/Will+10 versus spells, SLA, or poison while dex-raging (cloak not factored)
* Move: 40 base, 50 Longstrider or 70 Expeditious Retreat
* minimum falling damage and land upright

AC at 5th: 10+
5 (raging dex)
8 (+1 mountain pattern mithral armor, +1 mithral buckler)
3 (Defender of the Society, Dodge, Shield Focus)
= +26, plus another +5/+8 when Combat Expertise +Fighting Defensively or Total

Tactics: "That's right; hold still while I fix where it hurts!"

-- In the three or four wasted rounds of gumming you that most monsters with any brains at all will take to realize that your offensive output isn't particularly fearsome, they're ought to be nearly dead from allied firepower.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A hangover cleric, try and keep the enemy daze-locked (never tried it, probably very dull)

Human, LN, Worships Ra. Domain - Sun
Str 13, Dex 10, Con, 14, Int 10, Wis 12, Chr 16+2
Traits - Sacred Touch, + 1 other

1. Mendevian Priest Cleric. Channel negative energy. Variant channeling - rulership. Selective Channeling, Extra Channel.
2. Spirit Guide Oracle - Life mystery, Channel Revelation
3. Oracle - Improved Channel
4. Oracle - Hex. +Chr
5. Oracle - Versatile Channeler
6. Oracle -
7. Oracle - Quick Channel
8. Oracle - Spirit Ability, +Chr

Use the clerics channel pool to daze living creatures. Use the oracles pool to daze undead. At 5 the oracles pool can also be used against living. At 8 can get an additional pool using the Life Spirit.

Gear to consider - Ring of Protected Life, Amulet of the Spirits - Life, Vestments of War

I am playing a character currently with a similar concept. I would recommend you look into aid another as an action, as you can do quite alot with it if you optimize some for it. For me, the "frontline support" is a secondary role, but just a few feats lets me fill it well.

Finding a way to increase the aid another bonus is one part of it. For me, since I rolled up a halfling, the trait helpful was enough, but a quick google search can give you some additional ideas of increasing this.

Second, get the bodyguard feat. With some way to get many attacks of opportunity, you will aid for every attack (more or less). If you dont plan to have high dex, there are ways to use both your str or your wis for AoO.
For me, I give a +4 to AC for my team (who is smart enough to stay close), which is quite significant.

Alternatively, if you allies are also willing to invest a little, you can make your aid another bonuses last longer.

This is just a small taste of aid another as a frontline support. If you like the idea, you can find tons of other ideas for it if you google some. I find it very fun, but I suppose it helps that I have an ally with a very large sword to make it worth my while.

Hope it helps.

I vote mesmerist. Not only are you casting debuffs in whatever variety of armour you choose, you can cause an opponent to miss more often by staring at it. Mesmerist tricks provide plenty of options for damage-denial, including free action mirror images, the only unavoidable attack redirection I know of, and a no-save stun on a crit at higher levels.

Prevention of damage and negation of enemy attacks sounds like battlefield control to me. Slow spells, fog effects, debuffs of many kinds, walls etc.

halfling cavalier 4 , bard 1 , battle herald X.
you aid another like a mad man on a aiding mount.
and can charge well....

option 2:
Bard..... everyone love the bard.
all bards or skalds can be #2 melee, but also buff, heal and more.

option 3:
melee cleric + animal companion (evangalist).
you heal, buff, fight , ride ....

High Guardian Fighter. Mobile Bulwark Style. Cut from the Air. Smash from the Air. Adopted trait for the halfling helpful trait. Living bulwark for your other trait. Max UMD and pick up some good scrolls/wands. Dip Master of Many Styles and go into Archon Style. Dip a level of Brawler. Martial flexibility->Advanced Weapon Training->Item Mastery->Profit. Get a bodyguard familiar. Note this isn't in order. Just a series of suggestions
