A friend for my Medium? (familiar)

I just got access to a boon that grants me the ability to have a nightmare dragon for a familiar. I have a lvl 7 medium. Do mediums get familiars since they are spell casters? If not, how do I get this awesome familiar for my medium?

4 feats would be my suggestion:

• Iron Will (or Additional Traits: Green Mother's Pupil)
• Familiar Bond
• Improved Familiar Bond
• Improved Familiar

Would Skill focus (knowledge - any) —> Eldritch Heritage (arcane) —> Improved familiar get there in only 3 feats? Or does EH not qualify the PC for Improved Familiar?

If they have a Charisma of 13+ that could work, but since Eldritch Heritage is Level–2 you'd have to wait until 9th Level to grab the Dragon with Improved Familiar.

Right - forgot about the charisma requirement. I did think about the level -2, but figured that if the OP is starting the feat chain at level 7, it shouldn't be a problem absent godawful retraining costs - the medium would be at level 11 or 13 by the time they were ready to take improved familiar anyway.

A Medium, barring an Archetype, should be a CHA caster. So the 13 CHA requirement probably isn’t an issue.

A two-level dip into a familiar granting class and Boon Companion would also work, but is a lot unless the level dip complements the character. Maybe Eldritch Guardian if it’s a melee character or Arcane blooded Sorcerer for a caster. Some retraining might also be necessary if the character has already locked in their 7th Level class/feat.

Maybe just plan a protege or offspring of this character that can be more familiar-focused, and either GM this scenario for them or use that Boon that transfers access to another Chronicle's familiar.
