New GM, Question on Chronicles and Credit

Hey all -

I've recently started GMing SFS games. I'm entirely new to Organized Play, so please excuse me for being a rookie. I'm a bit unclear on how GM credit works in terms of my own characters.

From Page 16 in the Guide:

Quote:

A GM can assign credit for running an adventure in the same

ways a player can, and must follow the same rules as a player
when applying credit to a character. When you choose to take
a Chronicle sheet for GM credit, you must decide which of your
characters receives the Chronicle sheet when you fill out the
tracking sheet for that table. You must apply Chronicle sheets in
the order they are received.

My read of this is that each of my characters can only receive things like XP/Credits once, regardless of how many times I run a specific scenario. Is this correct?

A second question I have regards an earlier note in the Guide (Page 8):

Quote:

You can receive up to two Chronicle sheets for a given adventure: one

for playing an adventure and one for running the same adventure as
a GM, regardless of how many times you play or run that specific
adventure. A character may have no more than one copy of a
Chronicle sheet applied to her. GMing adventures contributes to
GM star rewards even when it does not award additional Chronicle

So, this would mean that each of my characters could have credit applied twice per scenario? As in:

- Receive XP/Credit/etc. for playing (if the scenario is repeatable)
- Receive XP/Credit/etc. for GMing

Or is this what the "no more than one copy of a chronicle sheet" note is trying to prevent?

If I carry two Chronicle sheets with a character - one for GMing, one for playing - do I use two of the regular player Chronicles and make a note that I GMed for one, or do I use that GM table record sheet (e.g. Page 37 of Into the Unknown)?

Thanks for any answers - I'm sure these have obvious answers and that I'm trying to read too deep. I think my main issue is that I'm not entirely clear on terminology. Cheers!

Unless it’s an evergreen, you can get credit for the same scenario twice: once for GMing and once for playing. If it’s an evergreen, you can get credit as many times as you like for playing and GMing, as long as it’s a new character each time. The same character cannot have two copies of the same chronicle sheet, even if once was GMing and once was playing.

Make sense?

Leaving out repeatable/evergreen scenarios and other edge cases:

You, the real person, can only earn one copy of a Chronicle by playing and one by GMing. It doesn't matter how many characters you have, you can only earn a total of those two maximum over all your characters.

No character may have more than one copy of any chronicle assigned to them. If you have played scenario 1-05 with character XXXXXX-701, you cannot assign GM credit for scenario 1-05 to character XXXXXX-701. (Neither can you get player credit for a character after giving it a GM chronicle for that scenario.)

In the specific case of Into the Unknown, it is a repeatable scenario. Every time you play or GM a repeatable you earn a chronicle. But it must be with a different character each time (still can't put both a player and GM chronicle on the same character).

Ah, got it. Thank you both very much for your answers - I'm 100% on the level now.

Thanks!

For quests, like Into the Unknown, you can only get credit for GMing if you ran it 4 times. It can be the same part of the quest four times or any combination that totals 4 hours of play.

Or to say a different way, you don't get credit for running a quest if you ran 3 or fewer parts of the quest.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Gary, when you say credit, are you only referring to table credit toward novas? This conversation is mostly about chronicle sheets, and I don't see anything saying that a GM use a chronicle with 3 quests completed the same way that a player could.

Yes, sorry for any confusion.

You are correct. I was referring to table credit for GMing. If a GM only ran 3 quests (even if it was the same quest) they would get a chronicle to apply to a character with 3 quests marked off.

Is there a problem if you have a level 6 character, and apply a level 1-5 scenario chronicle sheet to it? Obviously, you would get less money than expected for a sheet at that level, but it wasn't in danger of getting the character hurt, so that's likely a wash.

But, can it be done, or do you have to apply that credit to a properly leveled character? Does it matter if it was a level 4 character, and the scenario was played by all 1-2's?

A scenario that is listed for tier 1-5 can only be applied to characters with levels between 1 and 5.

edit: If the scenario's tier is 1-4, it can be applied as GM credit to a level 4 character who will receive rewards as if the scenario was run in subtier 3-4.
