Trait question

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Im new to playing and found myself confused by the traits.

I noticed the cards say things like eg. Arcane 10.... but none of the cards actually say arcane.

so my question is how do i know what trait to role if none of the cards have the trait im needing?

Hi

"Traits" are the words written in the top left corner of a card, and aren't relevant in general - they're only relevant when a card explicitly says they're relevant. Traits never list a number like "Arcane 10", they would just say "Arcane". I don't think you're actually interested in "traits".

Where you might see "Arcane 10" is in the "Check to acquire" box of a card. This means to acquire the card, you need to use the arcane skill, and you need to roll a total of 10 or more when you do. You look for the arcane skill on your character card.

If you don't have the skill at all, then your dice is a d4. In the case of "arcane" most characters do not have the skill (although there's quite a lot that do). However, this almost never actually comes up. Very few cards list just "Arcane" as the skill, most will say e.g. "Intelligence Arcane 10". This is listing two separate skills, "Intelligence" and "Arcane", and you can choose either, you don't need both. Every character has the "Intelligence" skill (although for some it may still be listed as a d4 anyway). Almost every boon lists a "base" skill, i.e. one of the skills which everybody has, in its check to acquire.

Sorry if I sound like I'm being pedantic about the terminology, but it's actually genuinely very difficult to understand your question as it stands, and it's important you don't mix these concepts up or you're going to get confused.

Welcome to PACG. Which adventure path are you playing?

Check out this card.

The traits, as mentioned, are near the upper left corner. They are Magic, Arcane, Attack, Force, Basic.

The check to acquire is Intelligence or Arcane 4.

When you encounter a card your will typically attempt to acquire it (if it is a boon) or defeat it (if it is a bane). For that you will care about the check to acquire (or defeat). Some powers will care about the traits of cards (or the traits of the check itself).

Hawkmoon, how do you get access to links like that?

They're from the blog posts. Use Google Image Search (or your favorite search engine's version) to find cards by name by searching for "Pathfinder Adventure Card Game" (card name)

If your browser supports adding custom search engines, this is the search query I use:

https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=pathfinder+adventure+card+game +%s

Make sure you delete any spaces added by the forum. (In the preview it added a space after "game" and before the "+%s".)

Example:

How would I find Armor of the Pious?

It is as Parody says. I couldn't find one for Armor of the Pious. It probably hasn't been in a blog post. To find Force Missile I would use google and search for Pathfinder Card Game Force Missile then look at the image results. The first result is from paizo.com. It is from a blog post. I get the link for the image itself.

You have to use the url tag to post a link in the forums (see the how to format your text spoiler), otherwise the forum automatically breaks your link by adding a space if it’s long to allow long text to wrap to the next line.

I know how links work; I've posted links many times (including in the post you quoted). This isn't a complete URL; it's part of the text for one, and I wanted to show that text directly in the forum while also knowing that the forum breaks long chunks of text. Thus the notes for what the text represents and that you need to remove the space the forum adds in order to use it.

Sadly, this forum doesn't have the equivalent of [code] to contain such things in their own separately scrollable area that won't break the forum. :(
