what's the origin of the wolf's ability to trip? it seems to be in every edition of d&d. do wolves do this in real life or something?

Wolves will bite the feet of larger prey to keep them off balance. This is often dangerous for the wolves but it's a fairly effective strategy. Watch dogs play fighting sometimes. They do the same thing.
