New Article about Pathfinder Beginner Box and 5e D&D Starter Set on filmgoblin.com

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hi,

I write articles about tabletop RPGs for filmgoblin.com. My newest one is for new gamers and goes over the Beginner Box and the 5e Starter Set. It covers things you need and my thoughts on the system. This is the first one I have written about modern gaming. Usually I write about old school 1e AD&D.

Link it like this. Since these boards break up long text strings with spaces, your link won't work if someone tried to copy and paste it.

On the article, I think you should modify this paragraph to highlight that all of the Pathfinder rules are free online, so you don't need to spend a single dollar to play Pathfinder. Calling Pathfinder "more costly" and saying everyone needs a CRB just isn't right. I'd go so far as to say the fact that Pathfinder is completely free is one of the biggest differentiators vs D&D.

Quote:
Although Pathfinder has a more costly initial product, long-term it may actually be cheaper for you and your players. Each person will need the Core Rulebook and the Game Master will need a Bestiary. Both of these books are available in Hardcover and Paperback so you can get them for under $20 each if you are cost conscious and go with the paperback.

Silver Crusade

Yep. The official PRD and sites like Archives of Nethys and d20 host the rule content. You can absolutely play without spending anything unless you wanna run a Scenario/Module/Adventure Path.

Or you want access to all the pretty art. And want to support the writers and editors and developers and everyone else working at Paizo ^w^

To be fair, WotC does make some of their rules available for free in their "Basic Rules" -- but that is only a small fraction of their rules. In contrast, all you really miss if you don't buy anything from Paizo is anything that specifically mentions named aspects of the Golarion setting (which IS a major loss, in my opinion).

Yeah I would agree with the cost. I purchase most of the books because of the fluff and their awesome art. but in play we don't really use any of the books anymore... even the core rulebook we only have one on hand...
I find with tablets and phones now it is way quicker to search something up on the srd anyways than to flip through the book
