Minneapolis Help This Weekend (or Northfield!)

I'm going to be in Minneapolis this weekend (Actually my hotel is in Northfield.) and since I'm coming from South Florida I was hoping I could "rent" a jacket for a couple days, maybe some long-johns and something for my head. Down here south of Tampa I have a sweater that keeps me warm the few times it reaches 40 degrees but, um, there's no way to, you know, buy something down here for that far north.

Send me a PM if you have an old jacket I could rent for a couple days so I don't die.
;)

THANKS!

Long johns are fairly cheap, you can get a pair at any department store for less than fifteen dollars.

Coats should also be on clearance, I recommend checking Shopko, Target, or Burlington Coat Factory, and if you don't need afterwards just donate it to a local thrift store or similar charity.

Warm hats and gloves are always cheap and found everywhere.

Good luck! The twin cities are a lot of fun!

Also get some sunglasses, the glare off the snow can be blinding if you're not used to it. :-)

Northfield? Damn, thats a ways from the city! (Though I live in it and any drive 20min or longer feels like going to a cabin to me)

The cold weather gear you will need depends on what you plan on doing here. If you want to crawl Nicolet mall, you will be in good shape. There are skyways and numerous shops and lodges to get out of the cold.

There is a Target in Northfield. I recommend you bundle up on the way here and hit it up on arrival. Stocking caps are cheap, and you will want one. I am guessing you have some type of pair of gloves to bring? If not, those are fairly cheap to. Coat will be the big ticket item. There are a number of thirft shops in or near northfield You should be able to score a cheap coat there.

If you have any questions about downtwon MPLS let me know. I live and work in the area and can give you the low down.

Cheers.

My plane arrives Friday night at 5:18.

I will be immediately going to the Hockey Arena to see the Wild play Las Vegas (game at 8:00). Then I'll be going to my hotel in Northfield.

Saturday I have to go to Target Field to pick up my Super Bowl ticket from StubHub's ticket kiosk. That's where I'm scared. I kinda have to go under the assumption that I could be standing outside for an hour or so waiting to pick up my ticket.
....Then I have to sell the ticket, which could involve me standing around Sunday near US Bank stadium trying to scalp it.

And Saturday night I'm going to the Timberwolves game.

Well there is a skyway right next to Target field so you should have some refuge against the bitter MN cold. You might even have some luck scalping near nicollet mall, which is also in the skyway system. There isnt much near the stadium itself so bundle up if you want to walk around it scalping.

You will have a blast at the Wild game. Excel center is a great stadium and wild fans are a fun bunch.

I work in the building next to Target center and its newly remodeled. I haven't been to a wolves game in probably ten years though. Should still be a fun time.

If you want any advice on restaurants and such let me know.

Downtown Minneapolis has an extensive skyway system as mentioned (it connects 80 different city blocks together). Once you're in it, you can often do most everything you need to, which includes attending the Timberwolves.

I'm going to second the sunglasses recommendation, because I'm assuming you're driving from Northfield to downtown. If you drive during the day and the sun is out, it's extremely bright. There's a reason arctic explorers sometimes went blind (it's not THAT bad here, but it's still rough on the eyes).

I'm currently using my spare coat, because my new puppy peed on my regular one and I haven't taken it to the dry cleaner yet.

REI is another option. Coats will be more expensive, but their return policies are very generous. Don't damage it, keep it clean, and then return it before you leave. Also, there's an REI store about 10 min away from the airport and it's pretty much a straight route.

Minneapolis isn't San Francisco, Chicago or New York, but there is very good food here. If you want some recommendations, post some cuisine you want to find.

I'll be using Uber or taxis, not driving.

(I was born in Brainerd; I just haven't lived up there in 20 years and have nothing but a Florida sweater.)

I definitely do want advice on nice restaurants, the best in the city (I'm a food snob.) But I was just figuring to Google it. All recommendations welcome.

Depends on what you like.

My favorite fast casual in the skyway is Naf Naf Grill. This is where i'd go if I didn't have a lot of time. Its also close to Target center and Target field.

For bars I like Ike's and Mackenzie's. Not necessarily award winning, but fair prices for the usual bar fare.

The Bombay Palace is a decent Indian restaurant.

I tend to avoid the tourist traps, but i'm sure you wont be disappointed in Fogo de Chao if you want all you can eat meat.

For dinner I went to Murray's right near Target Center before the Timberwolves game Saturday night; the food was reasonably okay but not nearly as good as it should have been. Horrible disappointment there.

But the rest of the weekend was Awesome!

The hockey game Friday night was great, our Wild tore through Las Vegas like a bunch of chumps -- and the best part was the fight early in the third. I've been to a great many NHL games and seen dozens of fights, and I've had seats very near the glass many times -- but this was the first time where the fight broke out right in front of my seat on the glass.

The NBA game was great too. The Timberwolves destroyed New Orleans from start to finish and there were so many celebrities, from Sting to Tony Gonzalez to Floyd Maywether to Stefon Diggs to that famous chef with the blonde spikey hair to some R&B singer I'd never heard of but all the kids were just going bonkers for.

The pre-game party and all the accouterments before the game were great, lots of new pictures & videos on my phone, and the Super Bowl itself was fantastic! I sold my ticket for profit and bought a seat about as good for less money. So I ended up with a great seat and a small profit.

Yeah Murray's is all name. It's all right as you say, but not the best mpls has to offer.

Glad you enjoyed the Wild game!
