Do Magic Traits apply to PCs with spell-like abilities?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Silver Crusade

I am looking at traits to add to the kineticist character I'm creating. There are some that interest me which specifically reference casting spells (Desperate Resolve) and caster level (Magical Knack). Is it reasonable to believe that such traits could apply to kineticists, whose abilities are classified as spell-like abilities, not spells per-se?

I would tend to think not. Generally, the rulings have been that various feats that affect spells do not affect spell-like abilities.

For example, see the Augment Summoning and Metamagic feat FAQs for the Core Rulebook. Also see the Metamagic Rod FAQ.

The main point being that the Devs seem to draw a definite line between "Spells" and "Spell-Like Abilities").

Though I wouldn't bash a GM for houseruling equivalents for the Occult classes.

Desperate Resolve? That affects concentration checks in general, so it's fine.
Magical Knack? Absolutely not. There is no caster level for a Kineticist, only an effective caster level on the spell-like abilities themselves.

the caster level of racial SLAs usually scale with HD or character level... so how is Magical Knack going to help?

It would take a GM ruling to allow Magical Knack to work with kineticist. An example would be a Monk 2 / Kineticist 4 using Lvl 6 for his kineticist class abilities. Never gonna fly in PFS.
Now it would work if you are talking about a Wizard 2 / Kineticist 4 where the wizard casts (what he can) at an effective 4th level.

IMHO SLAs do generally function as spells except as otherwise specified,
but functionally speaking re: Kineticist most of this stuff will just not work.
E.g. Blast damage is based off Kineticist class level, not 'caster level' despite being SLA.

Did you reply to the wrong person or something? I said Magical Knack would not work.
