Hell's Vengeance - Fire vs Electric / Acid / Cold

Hell's Vengeance

Grand Lodge

I'm about to start Hell's Vengeance as a Warlock Vigilante. I can have my bolts do 1 type of damage that I pick at level 1, and another type at 7, 13, and 19.

I can pick from Fire/Cold/Electric/Acid

I wanted to pick Fire at level 1 and then something else at 7, but I wanted to make sure I'm not completely screwing myself by choosing fire.

If almost everything I'm going to be facing has high ER or Immunity to Fire, early levels could be extremely difficult for me. Any advice? Thanks!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I haven't played the AP personally, but evil campaign is evil and I'd figure good outsiders are likely to show up in reasonable quantities. Angels are immune to acid and cold, Archons and Azatas both pack Electricity immunity. Cold is generally the most resisted element after Fire in general terms while Acid and Electricity the least. Putting it together I'd personally take Acid. Works on 2/3 of the outsiders, has minimal resistance outside it, and Fire covers your tracks against Angels.

As for what to do early on? Carry a weapon. Honestly mystic bolts aren't exactly that fantastic early (or later on if we're being perfectly honest) on so having a plain ole sharpened stick will serve you well till then.

Thanks Tarik, great input.

I realize Mystic Bolts aren't going to be amazing damage, but it just was the best / only archetype that fit the character concept I had in mind.

So if you were me you'd take Acid @ level 1, Fire @ 7, then Electric/Cold at 13 / 19?

Acid -> Fire -> Whatever is probably the safest route I agree, but I honestly wouldn't be too paranoid about the order. Since the whole point of the AP is beating up the Glorious Reclamation, I'd imagine the game plays pretty similar to Hell's Rebels where the bulk of your enemies are just humanoids who lack any meaningful elemental resistance, especially early on. Really, just take what seems cool early on and ensure you're not completely hapless if your bolts are neutralized which isn't that hard for a warlock (you have access to the wizard spell list and weapon finesse makes you work okay with a poking stick). That said, I maintain immune targets won't be that common prior to L7 whereupon your coverage will cover just about anything outside casters actively planning against you and weird corner case monsters)

I'm running this at the moment and my other half is playing - without spoiling it too much we both agree that acid is a good option to start with. Don't plan it out too much though, wait and see what you face, plus ask your GM for guidance (if they'll give it to you).
