Creating a Deity

Advice

I know generally how to do this, the flavor and everything is all there. Just need some specifics, i've noticed ALL of Pathfinder's Deities have exactly 5 domains each and have a number of subdomains. If i create a Deity what is the method in which i should go about it?

Should i follow suit with Panthfinder's example and just give them their portfolios/areas of concern and then give them 5 corresponding domains to those?

Should i follow the Deities and Demigods book (3.0 i think) and basically create them as characters?

For what I have done currently, I have their names, Portfolios/Areas of Concern, Alignments, Favored weapons, Worshipers, Titles and Symbols. I think all that is left is Domains lol

I would imitate Golarion (the setting for PF's deities) and definitely ignore the Deities & Demigods precedent. Paizo specifically refuses to put out stat blocks for the gods because it raises the possibility of sufficiently pumped mortals taking them on, and that's just not supposed to be a thing. (Of course, Paizo's attitude need not bind you, I just happen to agree with it.)

Remember to give each deity the two, one, or zero domains corresponding to their non-neutral alignment components.

Yeah, i know the drill on that, out of the five domains given 0-2 must be their alignment so a CE god gets the Chaos, Evil Domains and 3 others where as a True Neutral Deity gets 5 domains without alignment ones.

But in all fairness the tone of this campaign can end up where the PCs fight "god-tier" beings. And i always use Deities and Demigods as "These are their avatars" even though thats their "full form" in those books.

One quick question, how do you determine how many sub domains a god gets? Cause it seems kinda random, so... just choose based on theme?

It's your setting so you can do whatever you want. Have you looked into the mythic rules? Here's a little gem for you:

"Divine Source (Su): You can grant divine spells to those who follow your cause, allowing them to select you as their deity for the purposes of determining their spells and domains. Select two domains upon taking this ability. These domains must be alignment domains matching your alignment if possible, unless your alignment is neutral. You grant access to these domains as if you were a deity. Creatures that gain spells from you don't receive any spells per day of levels higher than your tier; they lose those spell slots. In addition, you can cast spells from domains you grant as long as their level is equal to or less than your tier. Each day as a spell-like ability, you can cast one spell of each level equal to or less than your tier (selecting from those available to you from your divine source domains). If you're a cleric or you venerate a deity, you may change your spell domains to those you grant others. At 6th tier and 9th tier, you can select this ability again, adding one domain and two subdomains (see the Advanced Player's Guide) to your list each time and adding their spells to the list of those that you can cast."

CR18 monster + MR9 = CR22 or CR23. You'd end up with 4 domains and 4 subdomains.

Fair enough.

I've always assumed it's as many as seem to fit their portfolio/theme, yeah.

Ooh, one more thing! Don't forget Mysteries for Oracles and maybe Variant Channeling for clerics. Variant Channeling is based on portfolios, so you might have to change your portfolios if they don't fit.
