I am considering going as an Arcane Archer, but I would like some help understanding the process. Currently I have a level 8 Ranger. To achieve Arcane Archer I assume I'd first have to put a level into Wizard and then another into AA. Afterwards how does it work? Do I then have to put more levels into only Arcane Archer to get the abilities or does Arcane Archer just automatically level up with Ranger? I've been told several different answers and I'd like it all to be cleared up please.

Essentially, yes. It functions very much like any other class, but it has prerequisites you need to satisfy before you are allowed to take it. You would cease levelling as a Ranger, and instead become a Ranger 8 / Wizard 1 / Arcane Archer level (for example) 3, getting the abilities an AA gets at each AA level.
If you wanted, you could take more Ranger levels instead, and go Ranger 8 / Wizard 1 / Arcane Archer 2 / Ranger 9, getting the 9th level Ranger abilities instead of the 3rd level AA abilities.

Alrighty. So every prestige class has prerequisites - in the case of AA it a BaB of 6, the feats point blank shot, precise shot and weapon focus with a bow and the abillity to cast 1st level spells, meaning if you wanna go ranger-wizard, the earliest you can start taking levels in the PrC is 7 (ranger 6 wizard 1). After that, you take levels in it the same way you'd take levels in any other class, getting what it says at every level. Note that in the table it says that certain levels also increase your wizard casting as if you have just gained a level in it (including an increase in CL and spells prepared but not spells known in your book).
Ps, why 3rd party advice and rules question? AA is core.
