Old Crackjaw

Kingmaker

So my players just killed old Crackjaw. The fighter who has armorcrafting wants to make his shell into a shield. what sort of bonus would a shell be for a shield made of a turtle shell?

Bone maybe? You can find it under primitive materials.

Edit: Okay, so that's not a good option. If he can turn it into a masterwork shield he can eventually have it enchanted so that it can be less sucky.

I'd use the stats for a darkwood shield but maybe with some additional hardness and/or lightness. Plus I'd make it easier to enchant (reduce the price, or make it easier to add some kind of aquatic or anti-reptilian penalty, or maybe it can expand to be a total carapace covering the player from all directions...)

Aquatic Adventures might have stats for a shell- or chitin-based shield. A shield made from Old Crackjaw' shell might be big enough and wide enough to provide cover similar to a tower shield but not as good (maybe half the bonuses?)

I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but I bumped up Crackjaw's CR for a 6 person party. I justified it by taking the water elemental gem (from this encounter's Treasure) from the mud in the lake to being embedded crackjaw's shell, which enhanced him. For your particular case, I could have given any armor or shield made from the shell some sort of ability related to the gem. Not necessarily the ability to summon a water elemental, but maybe a swim speed bonus or the ability to breathe underwater. Not sure what's thematically appropriate for just a shield, though. Maybe it can float!
