Paladin question concerning hands.

Rules Questions

Have a friend playing a paladin, and hes got a feat to allow swift casting of Lay on Hands also he has Two weapon Fighting. He intends on using a double weapon.

Assuming a Full attack against an opponent, can he make attacks with both ends of weapons, and swift action a lay on hands, which requires a free hand, all in the same turn.

Yes, it is a free action to shift grip on a weapon. So he can use a free action to let go of the weapon with one hand (he is no longer wielding it, just holding it in one hand,) use LoH as a swift action, use another free action to put his free hand back on the weapon (now wielding it again,) and then take his full attack.

Now, if he was actually using two weapons, this would be a bit more difficult, but using a double weapon it should be no problem.

+1 everything RumpinRufus said. Some GM's will let a Paladin heal themselves without having a free hand, but you are supposed to have a free hand. (The iconic idea of a Knight with a sword and a shield becomes exceedingly rare if a Paladin can't heal themselves while wielding a sword and shield. Allowing this pretty much does nothing except allow Paladins to try a different combat style.)

Just to be clear, a Paladin doesn't need a feat to heal themselves as a swift action in Pathfinder, they can do that already. If they're healing others as a swift action it's a different matter (although I don't know of any feat that lets you do that).

Playing for many many years now, probably started before you were born, and neither I nor my players ever caught the Swift Action on self thing. So many GM battles lost and won that would have swung the other way if we had been aware. This is why I like to comb through the rules questions - every now and then you get a good kick in the butt!

Thanks Mr. Charisma - that was an eye opener.
