Iron Gods

So I'm currently playing in an Iron Gods campaign. My character is a Shoanti Shaman, walking with the spirits of his tribe. Now, as part of the Shaman favored class bonus for humans, I can add cleric spells to my spell list and one obvious choice I thought for this campaign was Protection from Technology.

However, as my GM has pointed out, my character doesn't believe in technology. Specifically, he has stated there is no such thing, that "technology" is just magic sufficiently advanced so someone doesn't understand it. After all, anything done "technologically" can be done with a spell. And thus, my GM points out, I shouldn't really be able to take a spell that requires belief in technology.

I want to keep my RP attitude inverting Clarke's third law, so how can I flavor the mechanics of taking the spell while still roleplay insisting technology doesn't exist?

Your character could still try to ward themselves against this more advanced magic (that people call technology), the spell just so happens to be called "Protection from Technology". According to the character, the Technology part of the spell name is just what most people don't realize is actually very advanced magic.

I'd first help the GM audit whether he's got a legit RP-based problem with you having the spell, or whether he's actually hoping to keep the spell out of his game. Very different problems.

If it's legit RP, then look at if your group takes time for enough RP, or if a lot of things, like shopping, get done off-camera. And if he needs your shopping for spells to be on-camera, always, or only if the spell is one he'd rather not have in the game...

Then find a spirit that is a guy who died from technology, have a nice RP conversation, then pray for guidance, and maybe wind up with the spell. "This prayer defends against the Eastern Magics of sulfur and lightning..."

There are barbarian tribes in Numeria who presumably have spells their shamans use to protect themselves from the peculiar metal monsters who live in the taboo places. Perhaps your people had contact with them and shared magical knowledge.
