Starship combat - Engineer & Science spots

Rules Questions

Both the Engineer & the Science spots can have multiple people doing the job.

While we know the captain can preform a action to aid a certain check & the engineer can also do something else to help out.

Question: You have 2 people in the either the Engineer or the Science spots. Can one of those people preform the Aid other action to help the person making the primary roll?

Example: 2 people in the Science Officers spot and the Shields on a damaged starship need to be Balanced. To make sure this happens, one of the Science officers preform the Aid other action on the other science officer to give him a +2 bonus to his roll.

I don't know what RAW said, but simply based on the "play as a group" thinking I would say yes!

Liberty's Edge

RAW you can't Aid Another unless you're the Captain. They could both try to do it, though, which is usually better than giving one a +2 unless one of them is really terrible at the skill.

I mean, if you have more than a 10% chance of success...

Actually, there is nothing by RAW that says they can't. There's also nothing by RAW that says that it is a allowable option too. As it clearly states starship combat uses a completely different combat mechanic.

The lists of role actions are really specific and strongly implied (though, I admit, not outright stated) to be the only actions you can take.

The first half of the Captain's 'Encourage' action also makes little sense if Aid Another is a standard option.

Dark Archive

That it states space combat is a different combat mechanic makes me feel that using a aid other was never intended or that's my gut feeling. A lot like where it says that people should not shoot at ships so that ships don't shoot at people :) (never mind the artwork showing a operative hiding from a gunship)

So small update on page 322. In the blue It says that you are not assumed to be next to any other player and GM may decide you need to take around to get close enough to effect them with spells or class features. Again nothing on aid other but seems to slant the thinking to no.

Liberty's Edge

There is one time where 2 engineers may "aid" each other. That is the Patch action. But each engineer has to make their own die rolls.

In most situations, it is better for each science officer and each engineer to make their own rolls.

As noted earlier, RAW does not say you can or say you can't.

If you have a decent computer, it can give you a +1 on a check however.
