This is what the binding on my Starfinder book looks like: the pages aren't attached to the fabric strip, only to the paper on the inside covers. Am I correct that this is a faulty binding? Or is this what it's supposed to look like?

Yes, your binding is coming apart. The pages should be glued to that white fabric strip. Please send an email to customer.service@paizo.com and include that picture (or a link to this thread) and we should be able to get a replacement set up for you.
