There's a genre of book that makes you feel like you're playing an RPG game! LitRPG

Other RPGs

I recently discovered this awesome thing. LitRPG books!
It's written from a PLAYER perspective who's playing the game (usually in virtual reality, like Ready Player One) - gain levels, fight MOBs, crafting etc - everything that's awesome about RPG.
I've stumbled across this book which was excellent "Life Reset" @ http://goo.gl/H6sjzo

But there's much more like it!
I've actually reduced the amount of PC-game time to read them!

So I can read about grinding in MMOs instead of actually grinding?

It sounds exactly like something I wouldn't like, considering I don't much care for this concept when done in manga or anime form.

Exactly, but believe me, its VERY satisfying. The good ones make you feel like you do the grinding yourself.

I can recommend Life Reset (I posted the link above),

and also Awaken Online - an awesome book about a loser becoming a necromancer king and the villain of a MMORPG game.

I've enjoyed some earlier stuff with the basic premise - Niven's Dream Park, some short story way back in the early Dragon. Probably others that don't come to mind.

They were always more focused on an actual plot, with drama and consequences in the real world, than on "gain levels, fight MOBs, crafting etc".

1 person marked this as a favorite.

From the title, I thought you meant choose-your-own-adventure books.

I still have a few of those.

They also did a Gravity Falls one last year my kids love.

No, LitRPG is completely different than choose-your-own-adventure books.

Ready Player One is a soft LitRPG, for example. and it's currently rocking the world.

Life Reset - made me feel like I'm playing a D&D and an MMO together, I feel obligated to spread the news to other Pathfinder/D&D fans :)
