I see this abbreviation everywhere. Can someone explain?

It's a military designation denoting the type. Reads "mark."

Type 1 = Mark 1, Type 2 = Mark 2, etc.

Typically, the higher number denotes a more recent (and presumably better) model than the lower numbers.
