Advice

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I recently moved for a promotion (Yeah!) but had to leave behind the group I’ve been playing pathfinder with for the past 6 years (Boo!) I’ve checked locally (paizo and warhorn sites) and can’t find anything that works with my schedule.

As a result I am thinking about making a foray into pbp and have a few questions:
1. Is there a guide that will help me navigate this process? I couldn’t find anything in the sticky at the beginning of the advice thread.
2. If not what can I do to help my submission stand out?
3. If you have experience with pbp, have you enjoyed it?
4. Are there any fees?
5. Any other advice is appreciated.

At least for PFS, I would also contact your local Venture Person and see if there are any other locations that aren't on those sites. I currently live in Cleveland and we have a separate site (and then even another separate from that one) that we use to organize. Even if PFS isn't your favorite, it will give you face time with people which could turn into home games.

1. For PbP (assuming you are interested in PFS), post IN HERE and prepare yourself for a merciless onslaught of assistance and good times. For guides more related to PbP, check this alias' profile for links (under my "General Reading" spoiler).

2. Only submit a character you are truly interested in. You will be playing that character for (hopefully) A LONG TIME. At the same time, be flexible with your character. Some GM's might want to make tweaks to your character for one reason or another. HAVE PATIENCE. Especially if you aren't doing PFS, getting into games is hard and even then your game is likely to abruptly end because the GM bailed for one reason or another.

3. I think PbP is great! I have a whole bajillion character ideas in my head, so PbP is where I can play more than I could in a FtF game (especially with PFS). Being able to show your characters thoughts is a HUGE boon and what initially sold me on the medium of play.

4. If someone charges you to play in their game, I think it is safe to say you should find someone else to play with. PFS requires you to own certain books and stuff, but actually playing is free.

5. I am biased towards PFS (in case you couldn't tell), but I think it is worth playing a couple of games with the Society to at least get your feet wet. They are much shorter than an AP or a homebrew and way easier to get into.

Geat advice and thanks for the quick response! I totally agree with your thoughts on #3, it seems like you can achieve a deeper RP experience than you can in a tabletop setting.
