What are the more interesting / fun Capital Cites and trade hubs?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Hey all

I'm planning to run a trade caravan game set in Golarion.
I'm not sure where in Golarian they should be coming and going from though.
All I know is that I want it going through Magnimar and probably Korvosa at some point.

Do any of you know what are the more interesting capital cities and other trade hubs I. Golarion I could use to make my own trade route?

Thanks

Well in Varisia you ought to add Riddleport and Kaer Maga. But note that Varisia is the remote, rural wilderness far, far, far from civilization. Staying in the Varisian continent works, though, if you like Magnimar.

In Varisia you have Ilsurian as well though it's more banal, less interesting even than Whistledown and Wartle. You can add Janderhoff though Jorgunfist is maybe less of an option. As Urglin may be. Nybor and Wolf's Ear can be interesting, and Brinewall Keep. Maybe Sandpoint and Windsong Abbey.

But if you're planning on leaving the continent of Varisia, there is one land-path to Ustalov, a grossly long and dangerous, north past Urglin and beyond Scarwall Keep -- and another due east of Korvosa through the Mindspin Mts, straight south through to Cheliax.

And in keeping with 'interesting' cities, (along with Riddleport, Magnimar, Kaer Maga and Korvosa) when leaving Varisia for Ustalov, Caliphas in Ustalov is a great choice.

And from there, after leaving the continent of Varisia behind, you could go to the other big cities of Ustalov such as Leipstadt and Varno.

Then leaving Ustalov you could go to Vigil (SW), Nerosyan (N), and Daggermark & Pitax (E).

Or the Mindspin Mt path to Cheliax gets you everywhere in the Empire from Egorian to Kintargo to Senara and Kantaria.

But there's nothing at all, by land anyway, that seems to fit your 'trade hub capitol city' criteria on the continent of Varisia (other than Riddleport, Magnimar, Kaer Maga and Korvosa).

If you want to leave Magnimar by sea instead of land and make it a shipping campaign instead of a land-path caravan, well, from Varisia you could sail to Nisroch, Kintargo, Corentyn, Augustana, ABSALOM, Cassomir and of course, Katapesh.

If you look closely the maps, the most important trade routes of Golarion are either by sea or by river.

You can do the travel Riddleport-Magnimar-Kaer Maga with boats.

The same way, you can travel from Mendev to Taldor on the Sellen river.

Katapesh is also known as "The City of Trade; a city of organized chaos where cash is king and commerce is the highest god".

Depending on where you want to go, if it is a year that the Sun Orchid Elixir is up for auction, whichever of the Thuvian cities is auctioning it becomes a major trade destination for a year as the bides need to take residence.

I also think there was a trade routes map in aa recent book.... Black Markets maybe?

I would start with the trade routes described in the Inner Sea World Guide (p252) and branch out from there. Most of these are sea-based, and thus define the major trade ports:

Inner Sea World Guide (paraphrased) wrote:

North Tack. Sedeq in Qadira to Crentyn in Cheliax, staying close to the coast (but includes a leg from Katheer to Absalom).

Obari Crossing. From the Katapesh in the Inner Sea down to Casmaron and Vudra. Dangerous due to weather, monsters, and other hazards.

Path of Aganhei. The only major trade route that is entirely land-based. Two overlapping paths. One goes from the Realm of the Mammoth Lards to the Successor States (16 small nations) in Tian Xia, and the other runs from Kalsgard in the Linnorm Kingdoms to Minkai in Tian Xia. They overlap at the Crown of the World from the northern edge of Avistan to Ordu-Aganhei in Hongul (Tian Xia).

Sellen Passage. Runs from Absalom up the Sellen River basin (basically any river that connects to the Sellen Rivers).

South Tack. From Katapesh in Qadira to Sothis, to Absalom, then out to the Arcadian Ocean and down to Azir.

Varisian Run. Runs from Magnimar all the way down to Eleder, sticking to the western coasts.

The Varisian Run is probably the one most interesting to you since it defines Magnimar as the major trade hub, but Varisia has a lot of coastal access, few interior cities, and plenty of rivers. So a purely land-based caravan game isn't going to do much for you there. I think the closest you'll come is a loop from Magnimar up the Lost Coast Road to Sandpoint, over to Galduria, and swinging around Churlwood to Roderic's Cove and Riddleport. This route would be how stuff coming in to Magnimar or Riddleport by sea gets distributed to the interior, and how the smaller towns connect with one another.

You might have a similar land/river route running east from Magnimar to Nyboor and Whistledown, then up to Turtleback Ferry.

The limiting factor though is that traveling across Varisia's interior is actually quite dangerous for the common man, and even low-level adventurers. It's literally all wilderness.

If I was going to run a land-base caravan game, I'd pick the Sellen River basin. Lots and lots and lots of opportunities there.

Thanks for responding everyone. I decided to make it sea based like most have suggested. Starting at Kintargo, then following the Varisian Run north and back until they can branch off into a different trade route. Now I just need to get as much info on pre Hell's Rebels Kintargo and figure out how to get th m on a boat in 4 days.

Thanks again x

Darn, and I was just about to suggest Kalsgard and the Path of Aganhei.

Suggest away. I'm not locked in just yet. Why those two exactly?

Kalsgard is Viking, then you go through the Crown of the World arctic to Tian Xia China.
