Rulings on Late Players

Hey, quick question. I'm trying to look through the field guide for the rulings on late players and I can't quite find what the general consensus is. Is there a specific number of encounters that they can miss or do they have to be there from the very beginning?

Grand Lodge 4/5

If it's a standard scenario, they must participate in at least three encounters to earn XP.

They also only earn prestige, gold, and boons that occur while they're present at the table.

On the flip side how would most people rule if you sit 4 players at a module that is 10-12(no pregens), and during the first encounter a player had a family emergency and had to leave immediately. What was ruled at the time was player could go due to emergency with no chronicle sheet and the 3 players could play on (the GM drove 2.5 hours to run this particular module).

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I keep reading the title of this thread as players who have died.... sorry. just felt the needed mention that.

There is a ruling by Tonya about this on the forum. (On my phone or I would link)

The group has 3 choices.
1. Sub in the closest in tier pregen (not possible)
2. Play as is, possibly adjusting subtler if needed.
3. Suspend game until it can be reconvened.

In the case of overwhelming circumstances, try to do something humane. Suspending the game may be the best option because it's the closes you get to playing by the rules "as planned".

Or since this sounds like it is likely a module, check to see if it has a campaign mode option, if so, flip over in campaign mode and keep going with the GM making whatever adjustments are needed on the fly...

We played as is. We went on as if one character had died. Pushing on with 3 characters.
