Weapon for making a Gulch Gunner Ratfolk? - dangerous, I know

So I'm going to be making a Gulch Gunner Ratfolk character and I have no idea what gun I should be using for him as I've never played with firearms. Would I be better to use a two-handed gun, a pistol? A specialized weapon like the Dragon Pistol? I really don't know.

I was considering a double barreled pistol for mine. Unload two shots with one attack action? Sounded great to me when I want to be provoking AOOs.

I use a pepperbox pistol. And have a tailknive. Took a level of swashbuckler to get parry/riposte, since it doesn't say the riposte has to be the same weapon.

Fire (provokes), parry AoO with tail, riposte with gun for second shot.

Also, it lets me have dedicated barrels for special bullets, and cuts down on the paper cartridges.

A riposte is a quick return thrust following a parry. IMO the riposte must be a melee attack.

You can also only use the Swashbuckler riposte with a PIERCING light weapon, which irks me to no end. Kobolds get tail spikes, why can't Ratfolk? So you have to take weapon finesse as well to be able to do it.

Cestus or spiked gauntlets then. Better damage than a tail spike, can be used in a full attack, and still let you reload.

Does that work with a musket, if I wanted to use one? Does Spiked Gauntlet count as a piercing weapon for Swashbuckler Finesse? And can you wear a buckler with a Caestus or Spiked Gauntlet?

BTW, I was incorrect on NEEDING weapon finesse, it's just that as a dex-based Gunslinger your opposed attack roll is going to be pretty awful without it unless you use a piercing weapon.

The answers to your questions are "yes".

Neither parry nor riposte has any requirements on weapon types.

Swashbuckler Finesse is what requires piercing. So yes, you need to buy weapon finesse on its own. Yes, it's disappointing.

The bigger kicker is the size penalty you take for each size bigger the opponent is, with ratfolk starting at small.

In the spirit of real world comparisons, yes, the riposte would be with the same melee weapon. But pathfinder doesn't require that.

Wow, it's not often I have people hate my build so much they immediately run off to get it banned.

Caestus and Spiked Gauntlet make this way easier, I didn't even realize. Thank you all. For your help. I think I just found all the equipment options I want in the same thread.

Actually, one more question. How would it work having a buckler, a pistol, and a caestus all equipped? Would you have to state each round which of the two (caestus and buckler) are your "active" equipment?

Yeah, you can riposte with any weapon as the text currently reads. Doesn't say it has to be a melee weapon or the weapon you used to parry.

Just don't forget that the riposte attack *also* provokes.

No matter what gun you go with, pick up a dragon pistol (2 PP). It is great for dealing with swarms.
