Up the Irons!

Just got home from a two day trip to Nashville, Tennessee to see my favorite band ever, Iron Maiden on their "Book of Souls" tour. I can't thank my friends Joe and Jeff enough for asking me to go along. It was an absolutely great show. The openers was Ghost and they put on a really entertaining set, too.

Awesome!

I too love Maiden! They're not my favorite band ever, but they are firmly in my Top 5 Favorite Bands Ever!

My son actually just saw them on this tour a few days ago in Philadelphia and said the show was amazing (more than a little jealous I didn't go with him :)

Everything was paid for by some of my players as a way to thank me for being the constant PF GM and the fun the players have. They surprised me with the ticket and the news of the show and I was really moved by their generosity. I have the greatest players and friends in the world.

Nice!! What a great present - the gift of Maiden :)

That's pretty great. Alas, Maiden isn't coming within 1000 miles of Seattle on this tour - Oakland, CA is the closest spot. One of these days I hope I can make it happen!

This is the first time since 2010 that I've seen them. They usually come as far as Dallas (which is the same driving distance from where I live that Nashville is) but had it not been for my friends I'd have missed this one. I hope you do get to see them sometime soon! They don't disappoint!

Yeah, I really need to see them at least once.
I've seen just about every band I like at lease once (I've been to probably 50 concerts in my lifetime :) but alas not Maiden :(

I've see Kiss somewhere around 20 times though, including the original 4 back in 1979 !

I've seen KISS about 6 times, I think, the first time in 1983 on the "Lick it Up" tour. They became one of the only heavy rock bands to regularly play in Little Rock (the closest major venue to where I lived) in the 80s. I saw them 4 times as the original lineup in makeup after they did their big come back tour in 1997. I sort of refused to see them anymore after they seeing their farewell tour in 2001 in which they promised they were really retiring and not using it as a gimmick. The very next year they hit the road again. So I've not seen them since.

I don't know how many shows I've seen, but it's between 35 and 50. I used to keep up with my ticket stubs, but gradually stopped doing that. The band I've seen most is Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which I've seen 9 times.

TSO usually comes to Seattle every year or two; I thought about going last time they came through. I'd ask how the show was, but if you've seen them 9 times I'll assume it was pretty great! :)

LOL the stage sets and special effects are so high above the bar of most bands out there it's hard to describe. And of course it's a family friendly show and usually not that expensive when compared to other concerts. And they always pick a school's music program or music academy and one dollar from every ticket sold goes to it. I really recommend seeing them if you get the chance. It's a lot of fun and a spectacle to see.

TSO comes to Hershey every year, which is only about 20 minutes away (a really cool town by the way - it really does smell like chocolate! :)

I only saw them once, but it was really cool. Of course, part of that was because I worked for the largest newspaper in the area at the time and got to see the show for free from the paper's private corporate suite :) Catered food and drink, comfy chairs and a perfect view of the show - that was a great way to see them!

As for stage, and special effects, and spectacle though, nothing can compare to a Kiss show. They are just so amazing live. Like I said, I saw them first in 1979, which was at the height of their power and popularity, and it was my very first concert ever! It was a mind-blowing experience and it set the bar pretty high for other bands for me!

Speaking of that first Kiss show and saving ticket stubs ... I still have my stub from the show in '79. Guess how much the ticket was to see a sold out show of one of the biggest rock bands in the world at that time in 1979?

$7.50 :)

I can believe it. My first "real concert" was Foreigner and Billy Squier in 1981. $10.50 for the ticket.

My first concert was around 1978 and it involved a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...

NEIL DIAMOND!!!

I used to work in radio. The last commercial station I worked at was an adult contemporary format, and we played a LOT of Neil Diamond. I learned to dislike his music greatly.

Hey, you know what's harder than Iron?

DIAMOND!!! :)

Seriously, I still enjoy his music; it's pure nostalgia for me now. I can see how it could grind you, though, if you just had it pounded into you. That's the same reason I loathe the Andrew Lloyd Weber Phantom of the Opera soundtrack; whatever its musical quality or lack thereof, I worked a summer in a place where one of the people there just kept playing it over and Over and OVER AGAIN!!! That incessant bombardment of it just coalesced into a seething rage and hatred for it that has never cooled.

I can only listen to two versions of "Phantom of the Opera" -- Iron Maiden's song from their first LP and the version of the main title song by Nightwish. Beyond that I'm like you. I got so burned out listening to the Weber's version.

Don't get me wrong, the guy has talent. He's a great songwriter and his music can be quite poignant. But night after night.... oy vey.
