Playing a Free RPG Day module - required to use PC if within range?

If I am going to play/gm a free rpg day module (Risen From the Sands, in this instance), are players required to use their own character if they have a character in range they are applying it to, or can they play one of the scenarios pre-gens and apply to a PC within range?

If that's confusing, here's an example

Bob is playing Risen from the Sands. Bob has a PC, Luke Sandwalker, a 2nd/3rd/4th level gunslinger he want's to apply credit to, but wants to play the included pregen, Quinn.

Is Bob allowed to:
a) play Quinn and apply it to his gunslinger (assuming it's level is 2,3 or 4)?

Or must Bob choose to:
b) apply credit to a different character (his level 1 PC Frodo Bilgins, the halfling rogue)

c) play his gunslinger

Those Pregens are no longer legal.

Neither are the ones for the (I can't remember the name of it; the super deadly one).

I thought Risen From the Sand was the super deadly one.

I think you mean

Spoiler:
Dawn of the Scarlet Sun, though I haven't played it and know it only by reputation

Yup, that one.

Risen from the Sands was deadly if you played with the supplied Pregens.

Risen From the Sands does not appear on the Sanctioned Modules list in the Roleplaying Guild Guide, so isn't legal for PFS play.

It's definitely PFS legal. There is a Chronicle Sheet and rules for playing it.

What you can't do is play it in Campaign Mode and assign the credit to a PFS character.

As Nefreet correctly pointed out, Risen from the sands appears in the Additional Resources List and is therefore legal for play.

so to answer the original question, yes a player can play a pre-gen and apply the chronicle to a character that is already in level range.

Something to keep in mind, the player has to declare what character will be earning the chronicle before the game starts, not after. This means, if the pre-gen dies or receives a condition, it has to be cleared or the character takes it on.

Not quite, Gary. There is a subtle detail to the original question that you're missing:

Every FreeRPG Day Module has come with a collection of their own Pregens written for that particular Module.

Master of the Fallen Fortress comes with 1st-level APG Pregens.

Risen from the Sands comes with 3rd-level ACG Pregens.

Dawn of the Scarlet Sun comes with 5th-level 15pt buy Pregens.

None of those Pregens are currently legal for use. They were only legal on the day that the Module was released.

If you want to play a Pregen in those Adventures today, you must use one of the PFS legal 1st/4th/7th-level versions.

Thanks Nefreet,

I didn't know that subtle detail about FreeRPG Day Modules and the pre-gens contained in them.
