Dragon Disciple Form of the Dragon question,

Rules Questions

In that abilities description it says, " Whenever he casts form of the dragon, he must assume the form of a dragon of the same type as his bloodline." Do they mean with the spell-like ability, or do they mean my actual spell as well as my spell-like ability? I picked an Umbral Dragon so I guess my form of the Dragon Spell is now going to be Form of the Exotic Dragon?

Huh. Normally, I'd that assume a class feature which gives you a spell-like ability and a set of rules governing the use of the spell it emulates would only apply to the use of the class feature. But it would have been easy to write »Whenever he uses Dragon Form, he must assume the form of a dragon of the same type as his bloodline.«, but they didn't. And it makes thematic sense that any Form of the Dragon (spell or Dragon Form class feature) used by the disciple must match his draconic bloodline. However, it doesn't make thematic sense that this restriction comes into play at 7th level - a 6th Dragon Disciple using the spell Form of the Dragon can use any dragon, but a 7th can not? That doesn't feel right.

So, if I'm forced to make a decision, I'd say that the clause only applies to the Dragon form spell-like ability. If the disciple casts Form of the Dragon as a spell, he's not restricted by his bloodline.

Oh, and on another note, how did you get to select Umbral dragon? Both the sorcerer and bloodrager versions of the draconic bloodline forces you to select a chromatic or metallic dragon.

Dragons of legacy allows expanded dragon types for the draconic bloodline, including occult, outer, and primal dragons.

Didn't I link to that very page? Man, can I be unobservant. Anyway, thanks!

There's also the fact that form of the dragon as a spell doesn't allow you to take the form of an umbral dragon at all. You would need form of the exotic dragon, another spell in legacy of dragons.

Agreed with Blymurkla that the limitation only applies to the Dragon Disciple's SLA.

If it were my table I'd let you use Form of the Exotic Dragon (Umbral) with Dragon Disciple. It's balanced and I think the only reason it's not included is that Dragon Disciple was written before it existed and the prestige class was overlooked in Legacy of Dragons.

RAW Dragon Form doesn't work with the umbral draconic bloodline since you can only turn into an Umbral Dragon with the ability, but you can't turn into an Umbral dragon with that spell.
