I remember a while ago reading about whether or not a player can upgrade a +1 Reliable to a +1 Greater Reliable, and that there was a general consensus that it cannot be done.
I can no longer find that thread, and was just wondering if there was any clarification as to what is the ruling on this?
It's for PFS, so if someone could point to an FAQ or Campaign Clarification, that'd be great. If not, I'll just assume that it remains unchanged and that it just can't be done without reselling and whatnot.
Thanks! You guys are always a great help!

Things I do know:
1) I can upgrade a +1 (weapon) to a +2 (weapon)
2) I can upgrade a +1 (weapon) to a +1 (ability)(weapon)
3) I can upgrade a +1 (ability)(weapon) to a +2 (ability)(weapon)
4) I can upgrade a +1 (ability)(weapon) to a +1 (ability)(ability)(weapon)
That kind of stuff is pretty clear to me. I also understand that I cannot Upgrade a "Flame Tongue" into a +3 "Flame Tongue".
Now comes to what I don't know:
1) Can I upgrade an (ability) to it's improved state by paying the difference in cost? EX: Reliable (+1 bonus) to Reliable, Greater (+3 bonus)
- Initial thoughts say: Why not?
- Closer inspection says: Reliable, Greater is not necessarily the same as the upgraded version of Reliable, making it impossible.
I appreciate the help, mostly looking for a simple yes you can (with some sort of supporting evidence), or no you can't (also with some sort of supporting evidence). At the moment, I don't even know what the FAQ means, and I'm unsure of if you are using it to defend the "Yes" side or "No" side.
Either side works for me, I'm just curious on if its worth me buying Reliable at all? (If I can upgrade, I will buy as I feel it's worth the build up. If not, then I'll pass and just utilized the tools I have available to mitigate my misfire and buy more beneficial enhancements)

I believe you can do so as of recently (assuming that Greater Reliable contains all the functions of Reliable): someone quoting the relevant newish PFS rules.
You should probably try to track down what document that's actually in before doing it, though.

It does contain all the functions except it reduces misfire by 4 instead of 1.
I looked at the Organized play FAQ and it hints at it, but it's still not as clear cut as I'd like.
You may upgrade one weapon, armor, or wondrous item to another as long as the new item occupies the same slot, is made of the same material, has the same general shape, and has all of the abilities of the original item. For example, you can upgrade a +1 longsword into a +1 frost longsword or a cloak of resistance +1 into a cloak of resistance +2. You may also upgrade a magic weapon or armor into one of the named weapons or armors, such as upgrading a +1 banded mail into a banded mail of luck. As another example, you can upgrade a belt of incredible dexterity +2 into a belt of the weasel from Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Equipment , which grants a +2 enhancement bonus to Dexterity as well as other benefits.
To upgrade a magic item, pay the difference in price between the new item and the original item.
Well, I guess I just do it and if I get told later that I "can't do that", I suppose I'll just suck it up and deal with my +1 Reliable gun.
Thanks for the responses!
