Zevgavizeb's Many Monstrous Meatshields; or Do I Get Both of His Companions?

Rules Questions

The Demon Lord Zevgavizeb offers the domain and subdomain of Animal and Saurian respectively, each of which grants the Cleric worshiping The God of the Troglodytes an animal companion. The question is do I get two animal companions, or do I have to pick between the two?

And if I have to pick between the two, which is better? The Animal domain offers you a companion from anything on the druid list, but at -3 levels. The Saurian subdomain, however, has a better level rate of -2, but forces you to pick a dinosaur buddy. Clearly, the choice here is either selection or statistics. If I can't have both, then which companion should I choose?

You can only choose either a Domain or one of its Subdomains, not both.

Saurian isn't a subdomain of Animal, it's a subdomain of Scalykind, which Zevgavizeb oddly doesn't have. You can have both.

My bad, I thought Saurian was a Subdomain of Animal. You could go ahead and choose both, I think. Though I am not sure about how they would interact, so I'll leave that to someone more knowledgeable than me.

While (in my opinion) it would be a reasonable interpretation of the rules to say that you should get both Animal Companions, I can also definitely see your GM saying that you don’t (or shouldn’t) for the sake of balance – and game time.

Also, if it were up to me, I would definitely pick Saurian over Animal*. Dinosaurs are rightly terrifying, and it fits your patron’s theme more than most, in my opinion.

*Unless there is a very specific non-dinosaur AC that you have your eye on.
