Dwarven Mine

Liberty's Edge

I am planning on making a dwarven mine of about 100 dwarves. My question are what rooms do I need for the dwarves to exist in (everything is inside). This includes a military force.

This might sound crazy, but a great place to start is looking up what a mine actually needs in order to function. You can probably find floor plans and maps of real-world and historical mines

They need a source of water

They need a source of food.
They need a place to prepare food.
They need a place to eat.
They need a place to dispose of the garbage.

They need a place to sleep.
Are they going to sleep with many dwarves in a single room (barracks) or does each dwarf get their own room?

They need a place to store personal items.
They need a place for personal care (toilets, baths, shaving)

They need a place to make military items like weapons, armor and traps.
They need a place to store military items.
They need a place to repair broken items.

They need a way to make and drink ale.

They need a way to see the approaches to their camp so that enemies can't sneak up and block the entrance.

If they have animals inside, there's a whole bunch of other stuff around feeding and caring for the animals

If you're going to have clerics, the clerics need a space to conduct their religious rituals.

They need to be digging for something (Creating a home, gems, precious metals, common metals coal, underdark creatures, some artifacts, stone?)

Are they providing their own food (Mushrooms, giant frogs, pigs, rats, outside crops, processing spot, store room, kitchens and hall), or relying on provisions (trail rations, flour sacks, jerky, dried fish, preserved berries, store room, stove or directly on forge exterior).

Where does their light for reading come from? (Magic, torches made from materials outside, candles made from fat or wax).

Is the military force a militia guard? (Hammer/axe racks, watchtower, barracks, grinding wheel, armor stands, captain, lt and guards) or a full military force (mounts stables, anvil and forge for repair and creation, marching paths, blacksmith, captain, lt, sergeant, pvts).
Are there prisons? Prisoners? does the force perform raids against their enemies? Where do they train? Are they a bow force, or a melee force?

Who are their neighbours? (Surface dwellers? Underground trading partners? All alone?)

Is this a private clan mine? (Patriarch and his quarters) an Imperial mine? (Commander) a profit mine (the accountant and the overseer).
Slave labour? Dwarf craftsmen? Common Dwarf Laborers?

No good dwarf mine will have less than 2 entrances, and will ideally have a water supply and drain.

How are materials being removed/processed? Where is the slag going? where is the refined product going? (Export, on site refining, trade?)

How much is above ground? Do the workers climb out every night or remain underground all the time? Either way they need a hall of some sort.

Are their shared barracks or individual homes/quarters/niches? Living in the tunnels or in shacks/lodges outside?
Where do they "make water" when need arises? Clean themselves?
Where are their tools/clothes stored and repaired? By a specialist? by each miner?

The biggest difference with a real-life mine is that the miners don't typically live down there too. <g>

The list from Crystalseas looks good.

I would advocate also including offices for the main leader, and four subcommanders:
- master of smiths
- master of war
- master of mines
- master of logistics

You could also look up the very first dwarven settlement in RPG history, Thunderhold, from the Judges Guild (1976). Can't go wrong with retro products like those from Judges Guild!

Coober Pedy, Australia might be a good place to start looking for real life examples, but the reason (and length of time) they're going to be there is going to determine a lot.

Thanks everyone. I will use your notes and I think the map from Forge of Fury.
