Applying boon to familiar's or companion's action

Grand Lodge

If my familiar performs an action that can be affected by one of the boons i have, can i apply such boon to the action?

* For example, can i apply Grand Lodge's Explorer reward to modify familiar's acrobatics check?

* Can i do the same with Chronicle boon?

* What if the boon is described as a 'gratitude from some named NPC' and the familiar was present during scenario, was intelligent and talking enough to be reasonably recognized as one of those who earned said gratitude (azata, faerie dragon, etc)?

* What if my familiar has 'figment' familiar archetype which makes him a part of my consciousness?

BACKGROUND READING

John Compton wrote an eloquent post on the application of boons (negative & positive) on what he called CFEs (Class Feature Entities). This also included an option to raise dead and remove conditions.

In another thread, he allowed players to expend their own PP to retrain a CFE.

NOW MY OPINION

Your question does not fit neatly into these prior discussions. Different GMs will rule differently on it. Still, here's how I would rule these things at my table:

  • If you want to use your once-per-adventure Grand Lodge Explorer Reward to help your goat familiar jump a wall, go nuts. I don't care if you or your familiar uses this bonus.

  • Chronicle boons are much, much dicier. If it is an 'always' boon I'm going to scrutinize it. Compton's language in the links above suggested that such boons, positive and negative, go to the main character, not the CFE, unless the boon has special language granting an exception.

  • Is that gratitude from some named NPC boon a 'use once and then cross it off your sheet' boon? In that case, it probably does not matter whether you or your CFE buddy gets the benefit of it. As a GM, I'd probably look at it, shrug, and let you make use of it. If your buddy uses it now, you don't get to do so later because it gets crossed off the sheet.

  • Familiars, Phantoms, Eidolons... They get treated the same whether they are imaginary, soul-bonded or a ghost that has decided to follow you around. I give some leeway to intelligent creatures that can act independently, but I'd still look to John Compton's postings here as guidelines.

I hope this helps. It'll be interesting to see how other GMS would rule on this.
