Hi everyone,
I'm just trying to wrap my head around how equipment works in PFS. I've been playing home Pathfinder for a long while now, but I'm a bit confused about things work in a PFS scenario. During a scenario, is a PC allowed to take any equipment found on a dead/subdued NPC and use it for the rest of the session (assuming they know what it is)? I think I understand (though I could be wrong) that they don't get to *keep* any looted equipment after the session, though a Chronicle sheet might let them spend their gold (awarded separately) on items that they could otherwise not purchase?

correct. The chronicle reward includes gold, which you get largely from that loot. if you kept the loot, you wouldn't have the chronicle reward. But as the pathfinder society fences..erm.. associates, have ready access to prestidigitation, they don't mind if you bloody the +1 greatsword you found a little more.

As BNW says, you've got it right.
Speaking as someone who has two characters who have needed castings of Remove Curse because of un-identified objects (or, because I didn't care about object identification and just opted to wear the items in question), you don't necessarily need to know what the item is to use it. It's generally assumed you know what mundane items are, and that magical items confer their benefits or curses, even if your character doesn't exactly understand what's going on.

Also note that the raw currency you get in PFS is much higher than the amount you'd typically get in a home game. I don't think I've ever played a game where each player had about 1,500 gp in loose gold by the time they hit level 2.
The downside is that you do have to purchase all of your gear. The upside is that you have the exact items you want for you character. You don't have to worry about a +1 rapier dropping in the game if you make a character with Weapon Focus (rapier). You can just buy it yourself with all your golds.
It's a double edged sword in a way, but makes for a much smoother table experience since you won't have players eating table time arguing over who gets what.

Okay, thanks everyone. One last related question: in a situation like this:
Treasure: In Darsielle’s private quarters is a chest
containing 1,600 gp for Tier 1-2 only. For Tier 4-5, the
chest mysteriously contains a single copper piece.
Rewards: If Du Moire and his brigands are defeated,
reward each Tier thusly:
Tier 1-2
Give each player 362 gp.
Tier 4-5
Give each player 598 gp.
Is the amount of gold in the actual chest significant, or just there for flavour? If this happened earlier in the scenario, could they take what's in the chest and use it to buy something?

It's 99% for flavor. If you somehow botch the encounter , have to run away, but can still make it to the next encounter , the DM takes that much out of your pay.
If you're in a large city, and flat broke and need a consumable the DM might let you spend the money now, but it has to come out of your pay at the end.
