When multiclassing into vigilante, can you choose what identity your current identity becomes?

Rules Questions

In Pathfinder Society, I'm playing a warpriest of Besmara, and the character as they are right now is a fairly violent pirate. I was planning on multiclassing into vigilante to give them a more mild-mannered merchant persona.

My question is, can I choose to make my existing identity my vigilante identity and make the new merchant identity my social identity? The text from Ultimate Intrigue just says:

Quote:
In effect, the vigilante has two identities: one is a polite member of society while the other is a skilled and cunning warrior. To keep up this charade, the vigilante usually has two names: his true name, used in polite company, and his vigilante name, used to strike fear in the hearts of those who oppose him.

The "true name" thing could be interpreted as requiring the original identity to be the social identity, but it also says "usually" and it's vague enough that I'm not sure.

I'm still at level one, so fortunately under PFS rules I can rebuild and take my first level in vigilante instead if I have to, but this would also weaken my character for the next two sessions that they're in (because my stats are mostly built for having warpriest abilities) so I'd rather avoid it if I could.

Sorry if this has been addressed before, I did my best to find an existing thread, FAQ, or section of UI I missed but I could have still overlooked something.

The word "usually" negates any impact this sentence could have on actual rules.

I'd say you can choose your current identity to be whichever you want, and that in most cases it would make more sense to have your vigilante identity be the one used with most of your other classes' talents. RAI, most class abilities would make you stand out from the usual "polite society member" and require disguise check in social identity, though RAW nothing is said about anything other than vigilante talents.

Btw, assuming you were planning to multiclass at level 2 anyway, nothing is stopping you from playing the whole level 1 with warpriest as your level 1 class, and switch them before receiving your first chronicle as a level 2 (ie, vigilante then warpriest).

That's correct, if your violent pirate is already named "Dread Pirate Roberts" then you're pretty set on a name that instills fear, No reason why the time and effort spent creating a vigilante alternate persona couldn't be used to instead create a fake 'past' for a normal Farm Boy named Westley.
