Greed Obsessed PC

Rise of the Runelords

Hey all, this is my first post and my first time DMing a campaign. The group has gotten all the way to the final book and are taking a moment to do some cleaning/tying up loose ends before the final push to Xin-Shalast. My question is about one of my players who has fully and enthusiastically embraced the sin of greed.

The character is a wizard and is this player's second character, the first being turned into something... odd. This unlucky wizard has been nearly constantly mocked by the other members of the party for failing to kill a single thing in 5 levels. As a result of this and his time in Runeforge, he has decided that he wants to come back after killing Karzoug and basically take over everything the Runelord owned in the name of gaining more power. I want to have either Karzoug or his apprentice appear and offer this character the chance to join with the forces of Greed in exchange for power, knowledge, wealth, etc. Just wanted to hear some feedback about whether or not to dangle this hook and how best to bait it. Thanks in advance.

Well, depending on the overall dynamics of your group, that could be good or bad.

Some groups are ok with a party member betraying them.. but some don't take it well at all. So, worst-case, real-life friendships could be jeopardized. And that's not just if he accepts.. if he refuses, that could mean Karzoug targets him specifically (as a very greedy soul, just right for helping Karzoug finish waking)... and that could feel to the player like you're picking on him.

If your group is solid, this could be good role-playing for the greedy wizard to join the enemy camp..

Spoiler:
maybe as a second apprentice beside Khalib. Then he can watch them vie for the position of being his favorite.. and he could offer the PC the chance to claim all of Khalib's spellbooks and magic items for defeating his disappointing apprentice (see notes in The Spires of Xin-Shalast).

Karzoug could

Method of contact:
be using the Sihedron Medallions if the PCs are wearing them. He could speak to the PC in the PC's own voice, for example - or do the same once they start wearing captured Sihedron Rings.

Once the offer is made, though, Karzoug is somewhat committed. He may have tipped his hand in terms or revealing how much he can monitor the group, for example, and he may feel like he needs to silence the PC if the PC refuses the offer... and that's where it can start to feel like you're picking on the PC (especially if the mockery of his character has extended to the players and not just the characters).

Well, Big K would only appear with this offer if he knows that wizard is "going bad". He is the most greedy person in Golarion after all, and would not easily share with his power. Even have an idea to lie about this to sway one of his foes to his side.

The problem is that Karzoug owns all and nothing from what he had. By this I mean, that only he can know what vaults and remnats of his domain still remain untouched by Earthfall and almost 10 000 years of looters. Killing him and taking his title, gets wizard only the loot on Karzoug and his glaive. Wizard should somehow pry all the information from azlants mind.

P.S. Sorry for empty post. Misclicked and somehow cannot edit it :(
