Crossbow of Retribution

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

...has the following text:

"Add another 1d6 if the bane has a power that deals damage before you act".

Does that apply only to unavoidable BYA damage, or also to powers that say, for example, "BYA, succeed at Wisdom/Perception X or you dealt 1d4 Ranged Combat damage"? If the later - does it make a difference if I was dealt the damage (regardless if I prevented it or not), or if I succeeded the BYA check and was not dealt damage?

I would count such powers. The card says "power that deals damage before you act." It does not stipulate that you needed to have actually taken any BYA damage, nor does it say that the damage can't be behind a check to avoid.

"Before you act, succeed at a Wisdom or Perception 12 check or you are dealt 1d4 Ranged Combat damage" looks to me like a power that deals damage to me, and it happens in the BYA step. As such, it fits the criteria of the Crossbow of Retribution.

I'd assume that too, but this reminds me of the conversation far back about "immunity to Attack", and that monsters with "Succeed Arcane/Divine X, or you may not play spells with Attack trait" are not actually considered to be immune to the trait. So I thought I'd better ask.

I'll verify intent on the first part, but I can answer the second part:

The Damage rules begin "When you are dealt damage, you and other characters may play only cards and use only powers that reduce or otherwise affect the specific type of damage you’re being dealt."

You're dealt damage before you reduce damage. So when we care if something deals damage, we don't care whether or not that damage is subsequently reduced to 0.

(In the cases where we *do* care whether or not damage is reduced to zero, we'll instead ask whether you discarded cards as damage. In such a case, this card would instead say something like "Add another 1d6 if the bane caused you to discard cards as damage before you act.")
