It would be nice to be able to subscribe to a thread of your choice, and get an automatic notification by PM, or email, when new posts are made to the thread you are subscribed to.

We don't offer that, but we do offer RSS feeds for nearly every page on the site. (It's the little orange icon near the upper right corner of the page, right above "List This Thread.")
There's a service called Blogtrottr that you can set up to email you when a feed is updated. (There are presumably other such services—that's the one I know about.)
